Does this fit in the SD card slot of a computer?

This is not for an SD slot.  It is for a PC slot.  It is substantially wider than an SD - you can measure to see if it's about 34 mm if you are unsure.

Does this fit into the sd slot in a laptop? if not does anyone know of a firewire 400 to sd card reader?

This fits an expansion slot on a laptop. Most laptops don't have expansion slots anymore. So whatever ports you have when you buy laptops these days is what you are stuck with.
I have never heard of a sd / firewire adapter.
Look for a mini firewire connector on your computer. If you have one, get the proper firewire cable that will be mini on one side and regular size on the other. However, the device you are trying to connect may not be recognized properly.
There are usb to firewire adapters as well. Again though, your device may not be recognized properly.

It's a PCMCIA card used in a laptop to give you firewire capabilities in a laptop that did not come with 1394.   I use it in a Windows 7 PC to take the place of an old desktop that had a firewire port.

This express card worked very well for me. I've connected it to a scientific grade CCD camera and the camera driver software and Win 7 all worked flawlessly.

I've also used it in an older laptop running XP and again all worked well.

Of course you can never be sure that all Firewire devices will work, but given the very reasonable cost of the card, I can highly recommend it.

Will this work in a 54mm slot?

I use mine with a HP ProBook 4520. The manual says it is a "One ExpressCard / 34mm". The outside width is 40mm where it plugs into the computer case.

Is this windows 8 compatible?

Runs in Win7 just fine and I believe they use a similar driver stack so I would imagine it would work ok in Win8 but have never tested it before. (I personally can't stand Win8 and use Win7 on all my machines)
