5 out of 5 eggsSolid battery backup for PC

Pros: We have these throughout our office areas to give employees a chance to save their work in the event of an outage. APC has been solidly reliable for years now on several different models of UPS, including these. Like the extra outlet that is offset for large AC adapters.

Has four plugs for battery backup and four that provide surge protection only. Note that anything plugged into the four sockets labeled "Surge Protection" will not have power in the event of an outage. Those sockets are only for surge protection (thus the label.)

The sliding panel on bottom for battery access is more convenient than the old ones that required a screw to be removed when you were going to initially connect the battery or replace it.

Cons: We had an issue where a desktop was plugged into a new BE650G1 and it kept shutting down when a copier on the same circuit (but different outlet) started printing. The backup was audibly cutting in appropriately, but the computer still shut down. It was eventually determined that unplugging the USB connection between the backup and the PC stopped the shutdowns.

Not really a con, but more of a note: Running a printer or something else that pulls a lot of power on one of these (even on the surge protection only side) is a good way to kill the battery early. They don't seem able to pull enough power to both charge the battery and operate a power-hungry device. Printers and the like should just be run off a power strip.

Other Thoughts: We have dozens of these, and no plans to move away from APC for our battery backups. They're good, reliable battery backup units.

1 out of 5 eggsArrived defective due to missing parts

Pros: None

Cons: The APC UPS model I purchased has 8 power plugs. Of these an entire row of 4 power plugs do not function at all under battery power. Since the top row of 4 worked, I did not discover this until losing power 2 months after installing the unit, where my systems were unfortunately plugged into the non-functioning plugs and I experienced data loss.

Looking inside the unit it looks as if the bottom row of power plugs are missing a metal connection the is present for the 4 top row plugs, so basically this UPS is missing key parts needed to be functional. That is simply unacceptable.

Worse is APC does not have a realistic warranty program for units that arrive defective. APC requires the customer to pay shipping back to them, which in this case is 50% of the cost of the unit, and they only will return a "reconditioned" (i.e. not new) unit. For my situation this means swapping out a new battery & unit for a reconditioned/used battery at a significant cost. So it makes sense to instead not return to APC and use the 4 functioning plugs and keep the defective unit.

Will never purchase APC again, they delivered a non-functional unit and will not replace with a new unit.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect single PC backup

Pros: For a single PC this will give you enough time to save what ever work you have before losing power. I sustained a single PC under moderate load for 30 minutes before getting eminent shut down alerts. It is currently being used to back up power for a building automation system.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: If all you need to do is provide enough power to safely save work and shut down you PC during a power outage this is an excelent UPS. It will give you enough time to not have to rush to save everything before reaching eminant shutdown and losing power.

5 out of 5 eggsSaved me twice so far

Pros: Using this battery for the HDTV, Uverse box, and stereo equipment with very common brown-outs in our area. This gives me time to shut down the TV and stereo properly instead of crashing everything.
Not even a hiccup during momentary power losses.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Money well spent regardless of brand... save your electronic equipment with a backup PSU.
