CyberPower OR500LCDRM1U Line-Interactive UPS System

Offering battery backup protection for servers, telecom equipment, VoIP and internetworking hardware.

Why you need it: When power goes out for even a second it can result in data loss and hardware damage which can shorten equipment life expectancy. This battery backup unit provides sufficient emergency runtime power to allow for safe closure of open files and proper shut down of electronics when an outage occurs. In addition, it safeguards electronics from commonly occurring power surges caused by storms, activity on the power grid or high-powered equipment turning on and off. Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) stabilizes incoming voltage, preventing chronic problems caused by minor but frequent power fluctuations.

Typical Use

Provides backup power and surge protection for corporate and departmental servers, telecom equipment, VoIP and Internetworking hardware. Safeguards valuable documents, image files and connected equipment from loss or damage due to power fluctuations and surges, as well as uncontrolled equipment shutdown caused by power interruptions.

Product Highlights

Surge Protection — Prevents damage to equipment from surges and spikes, including lightning, and also safeguards telephone and fax equipment, cable modems and routers from power surges traveling through unprotected phone or data lines (RJ11/RJ45). The amount of energy a surge protector can absorb is measured in joules. A higher joule rating means more protection.

ENERGY STAR Qualified — Recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as one of the most energy efficient battery backup units available.

Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) — Corrects minor power fluctuations, including under-voltages, without switching to the battery, thereby extending battery life - essential in areas where power fluctuations occur frequently.

Multifunction LCD Panel— Displays battery backup vitals for easy monitoring of run-time and power conditions.

Additional Features

Energy-Saving Technology — GreenPower UPS Bypass Design saves energy costs by reducing power consumption and heat buildup.

Remote Computer Monitoring — PowerPanel Business Edition management software allows for controlling and monitoring the battery backup remotely, when an optional network card is installed, to safeguard open files and connected equipment during an outage.

USB & Serial Communication Ports — Allows communication between the battery backup unit and the PowerPanel software installed on the connected computer to enable power management and auto shutdown functionality.

Noise Filtering — Advanced EMFI/RFI noise filtering coils reduce electromagnetic and radio frequency interference that cause disruptive humming and static.

Audible Alarms — Distinctive tones sound when the backup unit is on battery power, overloaded or low on power. The alarm can be silenced if desired.

FREE PowerPanel Business Edition Management Software

PowerPanel BE is included with this battery backup unit and is easily downloaded and installed on any computer. Its diagnostic screens facilitate complete control of the battery backup unit's capabilities.

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems with 15 of them

Pros: I've used about 15 of these so far, they have been working flawlessly so far. Used for remote location network rack equipment protection. Replaced cheapo APC brick style UPS's that had a high failure rate.

The LCD is nice, it blanks after a few minutes so the bright light isn't on constantly.

Cons: No cons to speak of.

Other Thoughts: I would use this again, I just purchased 7 more units. The price point is good and the features and quality is good.

5 out of 5 eggsStill working

Pros: It's been plugged in and connected at all outlets for about 3 years and I Haven't needed to replace it yet, so I'm buying another one right now. For me, that's about the best pro there is. The unit has a protective cover over the power button, to me that's worth the price of the unit right there...

Cons: Heavy, but then again, for a UPS that is not a bad thing - just means the unit is stuffed with battery.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Totally quiet when no on battery, so it's defintely home theatre worthy
Out of the box with synology products
Weight is reasonable.
Power button has a clean plastic protector good enough for light child proofing ;o)
Offers peace of mind for hooking up a nas to it.
Looks decent in a home theatre rack, the information lcd turns off after a while, so the usint is discrete until you have a need to nerd out on the info.

Cons: Not a dealbreaker by any means but the led for the power button is seriously bright :-o

4 out of 5 eggsI think it's faulty

Pros: Easy to install, will fit on a 2 post rack, or just the front 2 posts of your 4 post rack. Easy to read display.

Cons: Unit reads 5 minutes of run time with 1 server, and 2 pieces of networking hardware connected. Once the power goes out, immediately cuts power to the server, the networking hardware, and screams loudly. Only running at 86% load.

Other Thoughts: Wishing I had spent the extra money for a higher output UPS, but this should have been enough for my hardware.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid UPS

Pros: Well packed in box; simple to remove and attach rackmount adapters. Very secure mounting in rack - I currently have three reverse-mounted and they feel quite stable.

LCD panel is highly informative - shows current load and estimated runtime off battery, as well as battery charge state and voltage information.

During power outage, performs exactly as expected: keeps servers up (for approximately 20 minutes at half-load). All servers tested run Gentoo Linux with NUT, and the USB connection correctly interacts with the Linux system to shut down the servers before power loss occurs.

Cons: None yet, though I haven't had occasion to swap the battery pack or attempt a warranty repair/replacement.

Other Thoughts: Will be purchasing at least two more to power additional servers.

5 out of 5 eggsNeeded Purchase

Pros: Easy to install, simple to run, useful lcd interface, does exactly what it claims to.

Cons: No instructions on how to install the rack ears, but just reverse the ears and move back one from the front to center install on a two post rack, no sweat.

Other Thoughts: Purchased because I was tired of losing aging 3com 3300 switches every time a lightning bolt struck my campus. Obviously, the old APC wasn't cutting it. 4 3coms put a 41% load on this box and it has shrugged off several smashing thunderstorms without issue. A good power base to upgrade to Procurves later this year.

5 out of 5 eggsUseful Small/Medium office network UPS

Pros: This unit is great for protecting standard office rack-mount networking hardware - I've deployed it with several customers and never had a problem with the unit.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: The best 1u racking UPS bang for your small/medium office buck

5 out of 5 eggsGreat UPS for none Active PFC loads

Pros: Great UPS for non- Active Power Factor Correction loads.

Designed so batteries can be changed from the front- but... see Other thoughts.

I used this UPS to power a Windows Home Server. Grid Junction UPS manager add on recognized the UPS, and all works perfectly- but... see Cons.

Cons: I bought this UPS to protect a WHS powered by an Antec EA650 power supply with active power factor correction. The total power draw of the WHS is 90 watts, which should give a run time of over 20 minutes. The UPS works fine when AC power is available, but when AC power is removed, the UPS goes nuts, and the batteries are drawn down to almost dead within a few minutes.

I contacted CyberPower support regarding this, and their response was very prompt. They advised me that the OR series of UPS does not put out a perfect sine wave, and power supplies with active PFC don't play well with that. They suggested their CyberPower PR series, which puts out a pure sine wave.

Rather than change the UPS, I removed the Antec PS and replaced it with a Zalman 750HP, which doesn't have APFC. Works perfect now, with advertised run-time on power outages.

Other Thoughts: Kudos to Calvin at CyberPower for helping me figure my problem.

Regarding the battery change-out, the batteries sit on a plastic tray that slides out from the front when the plastic front panel is snapped off, and the metal sub-panel is removed. The problem is that the tray assembly fits so tightly that the only way I could remove the batteries and tray was to remove the UPS top cover. the problem can be solved by simply removing the tray and sliding in the batteries without the tray. So if you install this in a rack that has anything above the UPS, check to see if you can remove the batteries from the front before you install and power everything up.
