CyberPower CP425SLG Standby UPS System

Offering battery backup protection for home computers and home networks.

Why You Need It: When power goes out for even a second it can result in data loss and hardware damage which can shorten equipment life expectancy. This battery backup unit provides sufficient emergency runtime power to allow for safe closure of open files and proper shut down of electronics when an outage occurs. In addition, it safeguards electronics from commonly occurring power surges caused by storms, activity on the power grid and high-powered equipment turning on and off.

Typical Use

Provides basic backup power and surge protection for home and small office computers as well as wired and wireless network routers and modems. Safeguards valuable documents, photos, videos and music files from loss or damage due to power surges and uncontrolled equipment shutdown caused by power interruptions.

Highlights

Surge Protection — Prevents damage to equipment from surges and spikes, including lightning, and also safeguards telephone and fax equipment from power surges traveling through unprotected phone lines (RJ11). The amount of energy a surge protector can absorb is measured in joules. A higher joule rating means more protection.

ENERGY STAR Qualified — Recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as one of the most energy efficient battery backup units available.

Additional Features

Energy-Saving Technology — GreenPower UPS High-Efficiency Design saves energy costs by reducing power consumption and heat buildup.

Computer Monitoring — PowerPanel Personal Edition management software allows for controlling and monitoring the battery backup to safeguard open files and connected equipment during an outage.

Versatile Design — Compact unit stands upright, lies flat or hangs on a wall.

USB Communication Port — Allows communication between the battery backup unit and the PowerPanel software installed on the connected computer to enable power management and auto shutdown functionality.

Noise Filtering — Advanced EMFI/RFI noise filtering coils reduce electromagnetic and radio frequency interference that cause disruptive humming and static.

Wide-Spaced Outlets — Large transformer block-style plugs can be connected without obstructing other outlets.

Building Wiring Fault Indicator — LED status light on battery backup unit indicates wall outlet wiring problems, such as improper grounding, that could inhibit surge protection or cause shocks. When lit, a professional electrician should be contacted to correct the problem.

Audible Alarms — Distinctive tones sound when the backup unit is on battery power, overloaded or low on power. The alarm can be silenced if desired.

Free PowerPanel Personal Edition Management Software

PowerPanel PE is included with this battery backup unit and is easily downloaded and installed on any computer. Its diagnostic screens facilitate complete control of the battery backup unit's capabilities.

Highlights

  • Intuitive dashboard design
  • Real-time monitoring of battery backup status
  • Self-testing functionality
  • Safe auto shutdown
  • Configurable system notifications
  • Power problem event summary

Versions available for download:

PowerPanel PE for Windows — Compatible with Windows 2000, 2003, XP 32-/64-bit, Vista 32-/64-bit, 7, 8, and Server 2008 and 2012

PowerPanel PE for Linux — Compatible with most versions of Linux

PowerPanel PE for Mac — Compatible with Mac OSX 10.4.1+

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work

Pros: Price good.

Cons: Doesn't work. I wrote ann earlier reveiw on this item. Newegg gave me an RMA for it. I didn't want the hassel of shipping and waiting on the replacement. Ordered a battery from Big Time Battery & Electronics based through Newegg based on the numbers on the bad battery and what Newegg listed as a replacement. Got the battery today and it is too big for the UPS case but has proper voltage. It does not have any of the battery numbers that it should have if it is a replacement for mine. I hooked it up to the UPS and it works fine.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsWon't turn on.

Pros: Good for what I want to use it for. Small size. Good price, as usual, from Newegg. Seems well enough made just a bad battery.

Cons: Didn't work. As mentioned in "Other thoughts", battery is defective.

Other Thoughts: Didn't work. Won't turn on. Tested battery and found to be 0.6 vdc. Should be at least 12 vdc after 8 hours charging. Battery won't charge. No current flows into it when placed on a 12 vdc trickle charge. When the battery in a UPS is bad thet won't turn on by design although the non-battery backup outlets work. Replace battery is $16.80. May just get it so I don't have to go through the hassel of the RMA process & shipping.

4 out of 5 eggsDid a good job

Pros: Good life span, very reasonable price, good spacing between plugs, heavy duty cord.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Bought three of these 2 1/2 years ago. One just died and for the price that is a decent life span. I wasn't really monitoring the battery so it may have actually gone bad even earlier. By bad I mean not even enough battery life to power a computer long enough to shut down. Replacement batteries are cheap.

3 out of 5 eggsnot for Power users

Pros: Works in range it is good for.. but range is limited.

Cons: This back up is only good enough to handle a PC and Monitor and only if the PC is not pulling any power to play online games or other CPU intense usage. Sounds alarms at the first real use of any power computing.

Other Thoughts: Save yourself the trouble and pay a little more for a better UPS

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for trying the CP425SLG. This model is an entry level UPS. The CP425SLG is only able to handle a maximum of 255 watts - the equivalent of an entry level PC and monitor. If you a connecting anything higher than 255 watts, such as a "gaming PC", the UPS will be overloaded and will alert you to the overload. We would recommend you consider one of our higher wattage models which will accommodate the gaming PC’s higher wattage and provide greater backup time. The CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD will fit your requirements well. Our web site has a "UPS Selector Guide" which will help guide you to the correct models that match your needs - www.cpsww.com. 5 out of 5 eggsDid a Good Job

Pros: I installed 2 of these units in 2006, I only have my internet equipment connected, I use Wireless internet, with 2 radios, 1 switch, 1 AP,1 router. These units are set up 40 ft apart and keep my VOIP Internet telephone equipment on line in a power outage for 2 hours, using the old phones that do not need power.
I do not use them for monitors or computer equipment. 1 unit just died, the other is still working.
I can't complain as they have served me well.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsabsolute garbage

Pros: none

Cons: Absolute rubbish. Defective out of the box. installed to replace 5 year old APC. A week later begins beeping with battery failure. Feels flimsy and lightweight compared to APC. I go through about 50 UPS devices a year for my customers. I took a chance on this one and the first CyberPower I buy is defective.

Other Thoughts: Total waste of money. Customer mad i sold them something dead so soon. Spend the extra for the APC. They are on my non-approved vendor list now.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding the CyberPower CP425SLG. Based on the experience described, this may be a result of overloading of the UPS. The CP425SLG is designed to emit an alarm when it is overloaded. If you are running a sytem with a large power supply, you may have exceeded the unit’s 255 watt maximum load capacity, and initiated the overload alarm. We'd be happy to trouble shoot the problem. Please contact us immediately at 877-297-6937 M-F 8-5 CS, or priority1@CPSww.com, so that we can act to completely address your issue and ensure your total satisfaction.

CyberPower offers an industry leading 3-Year Warranty on all of our UPS products, which includes the battery. With that said, we do sincerely apologize for any negative experience you have had involving this specific UPS unit.

3 out of 5 eggsCheap fix, but it will only last a couple of months

Pros: Price and design.

Cons: It has a 30-day warranty. Enough for the manufacturer, as mine did not make it to the 4-month. Did not even fool with their warranty, as I knew I was going to get Junk from them anyways. The problem is not the battery, it's the device itself, if i could at least use it as a Power Strip, but not even that, once it dies, it literally won't even work plugged straight into an outlet as a Power Strip.

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsBuy another brand

Pros: All my plugs fit.

Cons: -Not durable.

Other Thoughts: I've bought 3 CyberPower UPS 425VA. None have lasted more than 1.5 years. I had 2 supporting my computers and printers and a 3rd for my receiver, since my area gets brownouts that clear my A/V settings. There's no warning of a week battery, they just turn off and refuse to turn back on. Looking to buy a APC next. I have a Geek Squad-branded tower UPS with display which has been running fine for 2+ years. Save your money and buy another brand.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsWorked as expected

Pros: Worked out of box as expected no issues

Cons: Has a small capacity however I knew that and was not putting much on them so not much of a con.

Other Thoughts: Not for large power consuming items as you wont get much battery backup - better for low watt items.

3 out of 5 eggsHoped for better

Pros: Features are great
8 outlets
425VA
255watts

Cons: Battery died after 1 power outage
Will not recharge

Other Thoughts: I was using this to make sure a tiny 2 outdoor cam security dvr would continue running during power outages.
All it had to do was run 2 little ac/dc wallwarts of less than 3 amps.

When the power finally went out it took over and doing it's job quite nicely.
I'm not sure how long it beeped before I finally turned it off *(20 or 30 min?)
The dvr and camera's continued to work but would not power back up after power was restored.
no green light and will not recharge, now it's an expensive surge protector?
