Question 1

Can I safely run a 600 watt system on this? If I'm pulling too much power will it fail gracefully?

I purchased this unit to run my server, which is much lower power. That said, I run my PC on a 700 VA. My PC has a 650W power supply, 8 core processor and a GTX 1060. Under normal load (doing productivity work, not playing games) I have about 11-12 minutes of battery time. This increases on system being idle and decreases when playing high resolution graphics games. On my PC, that is more than sufficient since the OS drive is and SSD and the data drive is a hybrid. My shutdown time is under 1 minute. I personally think the 650 VA should be sufficient for you.

Question 2

Will the "Smart Outlets" work as pain old dumb outlets if no usb connection is present or will I run into problems?

The "Eco Outlets" feature can be turned on and off.  So it shouldn't be a problem.  If no PC is connected to the USB the default mode is "Eco Mode off" thus leaving eco outlets "on" so long as AC power is still being supplied to the device.

Question 3

I connect to the internet thru  RJ-45 (Ethernet) port. Any chance there is dual RJ-11/RJ-45 jacks instead of just RJ-11?  I have not connected my modem for years.

The jack on this UPS is only designed for RJ-11 signaling so you really wouldn't want to plug in your ethernet connection through this. 
Also you don't want to ever use a splitter on an RJ-45 connection. Most splitters are passive and will drop your connection down to 10Mps. The correct way to split an Ethernet connection is to use a Hub or switch, but that will not work in this case either.

battery replaceable?

they are 64 bucks ... a replacement battery is 1/2 the price of the unit. prob better off just buying a new one.

However im 95% sure you can replace the battery

Does this unit run "clean" power to the input cords ?

the power will be buffered, keep an eye out for sine wave output. You want simulated for cheaper non-critical gear like a desktop, and pure sine wave for servers and other core devices.

If it isn't simulated at least, then don't buy it as it will do more harm than good.

Batteries don't last forever, how many years will this last?

depends on your power conditions. Poor mains power that keeps causing the battery to buffer/buck the voltage will shorten the life of the unit especially if you have a full load on the battery ports

3 years is about average for "normal" conditions. The above would likely be shorter.

Is this unit generator compatible?

Accepted Answer

Some generators provide clean regulated power that is even better than typical power company AC.  But many generators produce power that is not meant for electronics.  Make sure you get a good quality generator that states that it is safe for electronic use.

Question 8

This UPS is intended to go into a very green building where the amount of power being pulled is an issue. Does this pull 390 watts continuously or not?

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: the 390W rating is not the amount of power this unit consumes; rather, it is the amount of power that it can provide to connected devices during a power outage.  When the power is on, it will consume whatever amount of power the connected devices normally use, plus some additional amount to charge the batteries.  So, for example, if the computer that is connected uses 150W, and the UPS needs 5W to charge its batteries, it will consume a total of 155W.

Question 9

I'd like to monitor the UPS remotely. Is the PowerPanel PE software configurable in a remote location?

Accepted Answer

No. It's a local only communication. If you are looking for remote communication or management, you'll need a unit with a communications slot. RMCARD202 is the network based card, find a ups that integrates with that.

This unit is home user and for devices that don't need much interaction.

Question 10

can this send a shut-down signal to a linux based system?

TL:DR=Yes. Almost all the CyberPower UPS products with USB ports(such as this one) create a virtual serial port for this purpose. In linux, it will show up as a tty device (/dev/ttyn) where n=some number. you cna determine which tty device it is by powering on the UPS, unplug USB, type in "ls /dev | grep tty" into console and noting the results. then plug in USB and use the same command and you should have a tty device that was not there before. your distro may have a script or program to handle shutting down. if not you can easily write a shell script to handle that. TL:DR=Yes
