1 out of 5 eggsTerible UPS

Pros: Cheap. Rack mount. LED display.

Cons: After a few months one my UPS went bad. Scene it was under warranty i e-mail trippplite and asked to RMA it. They guided me through steps to test and the test failed. I was informed it was the batteries going bad. I requested a box prepaid as shipping would be just as must to buy a new one. They said they don't do prepaid i would have to pay myself. Terrible support there.

Other Thoughts: Horrible electrical engineering. Should the batteries die this UPS which UPS also serve as a surge protected and even do something that a 10 dollar surge protect form Wal-marts shelf can do cause it will refuse to funtion if the batteries are dead. Also the batteries are NOT end user maintenance they are only (according to manual) serviceable by trained technicians at tripplite as you have to crack open the entire unit just to replace them. Never seen ANY UPS have to do this. I will never purchase a tripplite item again.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid product

Pros: 1500 watt UPS with auto shutdown/restart. LCD shows real time AC Volts and proves continually why a good UPS in needed as it regulates the fluctuating input current. Software can be used to shutdown/restart multiple PC's through network without needing to be connected directly to the UPS.

Cons: Needing to install a VMA to run the software seems extreme and may be complicated to some but is worth the effort.

Other Thoughts: 1500 watts is sufficient for my home server build but I only connect that and the monitor to it just in case.

1 out of 5 eggsApparently "U" != "Uninterruptible"

Pros: Relatively inexpensive, as long as you don't count the cost of potential data loss when it drops power to your server.

Cons: This unit works great...until the batteries get old. At that point, the unit will randomly drop power to the connected equipment. Doesn't tell you that the batteries are bad, doesn't do anything except unceremoniously killing power to whatever's connected. I called Tripp Lite support about this, and they said it's perfectly normal for an "Uninterruptable" Power Supply to interrupt power in this way. If you want an actual UPS, this is not the product for you.

Manufacturer Response:

Like every battery, UPS batteries need to be replaced after extended use. Once the battery on the SMART1500LCD needs to be replaced, the battery icon will illuminate, alerting the user to replace the battery prior to UPS shutdown. Tripp Lite recommends that a self-test is conducted on the any UPS periodically to monitor the capacity and voltage of the batteries. If you have any other questions, please contact Tripp Lite’s Chicago-based Tech Support Team at 773-869-1234 and they will be happy to troubleshoot the issue further. Thank you.

1 out of 5 eggsRack mountable UPS for arround $200 seem to good to be true? It is.

Pros: Is a UPS, appears to switch to battery properly.
Serial and USB connections

Cons: "Rack mount" brackets are designed to grip the edge of the UPS. Screws go into the plastic, not meta.
Holes in bracket are too small for M6 or 1/4" screws. They are too close to the edge and the metal is too thin for expanding the holes to be possible.
Brackets are thin, cheap metal that bends easily.
Wall-wart outlets result in the transformers hanging off the top/bottom or sides of the UPS, not very practical.

Other Thoughts: This is not a rack-mount UPS; it's a tower UPS with a couple of cheap brackets included so they can claim it's rack mountable.

I'm not sure it would be very stable standing on edge, the best orientation may be sitting flat. Who wants a 16" wide, 3.5" high UPS sitting on their floor.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your review. The housing on the SMART1500LCD is made of plastic, not metal. If you are looking for a 1500VA rack mountable UPS that has metal housing and advanced features, we recommend Tripp Lite’s SMART1500RM2U (Newegg # N82E16842111053). If you have any other questions, please contact our Chicago-based Tech Support Team at 773-869-1234.

1 out of 5 eggsFail

Pros: It has a trendy blue LCD readout to let you know that the line voltage and battery levels are OK. Unfortunately, that's while it's cutting power to all of your devices for absolutely no reason.

Cons: Replaced a 600W TrippLite version that I thought was just underpowered for what I had hooked up to it, but in hindsight was probably my first indication that TL is a questionable brand. Had bad experiences w/APC, and wanted to support a local Chicago company. Never again. A CLACK sound will be followed by the unit dropping power to all connected devices with no power issues in the house at all. No response from TL support, now I have to find a way to responsibly dispose of the unit.

Other Thoughts: All this device is supposed to do is provide enough time to elegantly shut down operating systems and routers in the event of a power outage. Instead, it cuts power to all of those devices without any warning, while on a full battery, under normal AC and environmental conditions. I can only imagine what spikes it's delivering when it tanks out. It happened frequently enough that I just took the thing offline and abandoned it after getting no help from TrippLite email support.

3 out of 5 eggsRevised model somewhat more reliablae

Pros: Low cost unit for light use and A/V equipment.

Cons: Original models from around 2009 had what appears to be a cost cutting design defect in that the cooling fan was not put in. You can actually see the labels on the circuit board and the vent slot where a 3" fan was to go. The heat buildup from the transformer will cause the batteries to crack and fail. This kind of failure shutdowns the UPS immediately without warning. The battery failure warning only works if the batteries are failing in a normal manner.

Other Thoughts: Tripp-Lite replaced my unit free of charge, I did not even have to send back the old one. The replacement has a fan and better LCD and has been running perfectly for some time. You can easily unscrew the cover (6 screws) and replace the batterys in the older models and get it running again but you will need to keep it in a very cool place, cut holes and/or install a cooling fan. In my case I put in a 3" fan and ran the wires out the back to a 12V transformer. The 12V fan soldier terminals on the old revision UPS circuit board do not work.

It should be noted that Tripp-Lite labels the primarily application of UPS for rack-mount or standing audio/video equipment. This really isn't a server room grade model.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage UPS

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Very poor reliability.

I've purchased about 30 of these for use in networking closets. After two years, about half of those have already died. Only a couple were due to battery failures, most just crapped out completely (i.e. shut off randomly and won't turn back on).

Even the ones that died due to battery failure ended in downtime. When a battery is failing the unit will shutoff when it attempts a self-test rather than just reporting that a replacement is needed.

These were purchased at the time because they were so much cheaper than an equivilent APC, however now APC has a very nice BackUPS 1500, which are priced similarly and are MUCH more reliable.

Other Thoughts: Buy a better UPS if you need reliable batter backup or save the $$$ and just purchase a good surge suppressor since this UPS won't give reliable uptime anyway.

5 out of 5 eggsI like Tripp Lite UPS

Pros: I have this UPS for more than 3 years. One day battery died on it. I took it apart and using heavy gauge speaker wire (gauge #2 for 200 Amps) connected to a large external sealed acid battery that I have for solar system.

Now, this UPS can have more than 2 hours standby power when we had power failure last year.

Cons: Make sure your use sealed lead acid battery, not car battery.

Other Thoughts: I had APC brand before, APC are junk, not work reliable at all.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Product

Pros: LCD Display, mounting optiones - Tower, Desktop or Rack

Cons: Terrible Reliability

Other Thoughts: Purchased to keep 1 Workstation and LCD Monitor running in a business application. Unit was not even a year old when failed. Did it with Pop and Smoke. No Storms, no power dips or surge. Dropped the load dead. Tripp-Lite is sending a replacement, but a little unsure of leaving unit running when no one is around. Tripp-Lite also did not arrange for return of old unit. What AM I going to do with something that smells that burnt? Getting hard to get rid of electronics these days. Guess I'll use the Batteries in something else.
