5 out of 5 eggsLUMEN

Pros: It's bright. It works, pretty flexible.

Mainly wanted to buy this so it doesn't create so much heat in my room. (My PC is already a giant heater that makes my room hot)

Cons: Does seem flimsy. Just don't punch it.

Other Thoughts: Reading other reviews, it really sounds like people literally wrestle with this thing till it breaks.

Just leave the lamp be, and nothing will happen to it.

4 out of 5 eggsnice after fixing the hinge

Pros: I like the illumination it provides.
It is good lighting when on sale and if the hinge works better. See instructions below.
It may not be obvious from the photos, but the head also swivels so you can prevent the light from shining in your eyes.

The four eggs rating is after fixing the hinge. It is not that difficult - once I figured out which parts to purchase. But if you don't want to fix it, I would rate it two eggs.

Cons: Weak hinges
The way the power cord plugs into the arm is ugly.

Some have mentioned roughening the plastic within the hinge so the arm stays in the set position better. I did that. I want to caution the user to do the minimum roughening needed. If too much material is removed, this creates a gap between the surfaces. This is bad because it forces the plastic to flex more, putting stress on the plastic. This could eventually break the arm.

Other Thoughts: Replacement parts for the base hinge to make the tightening mechanism more durable and easier to adjust.

PARTS
Hillman part number 880643, Hex Cap Screws, Class 8.8, M4-.70 x 50, Qty 4. SKU 008236710359. Only one is required. These are actually a little longer than needed. The head of this capscrew fits into the hexagonal recess in the arm. That is why the metric size is used instead of (the slightly cheaper and more available) SAE/English size.

Hillman part number 880804, Wing nut, M4-.70, Qty 1. SKU 008236711950. Again, metric.

Four to six washers, size M4 OR size 8 SAE/English. These go under the wing nut to fill the cylindrical recess in the arm where the original plastic nut fit. The quantity varies because the washer thickness can vary. Extra washers beyond the minimum can be used to position the wing nut higher making it easier to grip. SECOND OPTION: A larger washer could be used that will sit on the top edge of the recess. The problem is that it has to be just the right size - too big and it will interfere with some plastic protrusions on the side of the arm. If you have the tools (file, hacksaw, grinder, etc), a larger washer can be modified to eliminate the interference. The specified cap screw is long enough to accommodate this approach.

I found all the parts at Lowes Hardware. These are common parts that should be available at hardware stores. Both the generic name and the manufacturer part number are provided.

ASSEMBLY
Support the arm so it does not fall. Remove the plastic cap without the slot to expose the nut - just pry it off. Unscrew the plastic cap with the slot. Remove the nut. Note that one side of the arm has a hexagonal recess where the nut is retained. The hexagonal recess keeps the nut from turning. The other side has a circular recess.

Insert the hex cap screw into the side of the arm with the hexagonal recess.

On the side of the arm with the circular recess, add the washers on to the cap screw threaded end. Add enough washers to fill the recess. If it is not filled, the wing nut will rub on the plastic - bad. Extra washers can be added to make the wing nut easier to access.

Thread the wing nut onto the cap screw threads. Tighten. The end of the cap screw should go all the way through the wing nut. If not, remove washers.

The sticker instructing how to tighten the screw can be removed.

OTHER NOTES
This approach will probably also work with the upper hinge, but I did not try it as it is working fine for me.

If you want to remove the cover under the base, there are 5 screws. One can be seen. Four are under the foam, about 3/4" in from the corners of the "smile". Probe the foam to find the soft depression to find the (phillips head) screw locations. This would allow adding more weight inside the base.
The arm can be removed and mounted "backwards" on the base. This allows the arm to have more reach, but more weight is needed on the base. Some plastic must be filed off for this to

4 out of 5 eggsGood Desklamp

Pros: This is a nice light, the pictures are deceiving it's bigger than I thought.
The lamp intensity is good overall, not florescent or bright LED blue.
Sturdy enough it stays where you put it. Remember its not a goose-neck.
Put it on your desk and leave it alone!
Same black plastic as my Dell monitor.
Saw one similar in Home Dopey for $80.00 although I didn't see it lit.

Cons: None so far we'll see how it holds up?

3 out of 5 eggsCheap Plastic Screws

Pros: Not too bright, not too dim... Just right for my desk and low power consumption.

Cons: Cheap plastic screws to tighten the hinges. Broke both of them.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor design choices

Pros: It's very sleek looking and has good light output and low power. Got a good price on it.

Cons: Poor choices for the upper hinged lamp head. The screw will not fix the head of the lamp. The head flops about flimsily. I took that joint apart and inserted some masking tape to increase the clamping force of the screw to the head. It has helped but it really needs a few rubber washers for more friction. The other thing I really hate about it is the power switch is on the underside of the lamp head, the weakest part of the whole lamp. I wished it would've been on the neck or the base itself. Also, the power button is small so if you're using it on the night stand, you really have to grope for it.

Other Thoughts: I'm thinking of rewiring it and adding a large and proper switch on the base.

3 out of 5 eggsDo not overtighten! Workaround

Pros: bulb does not burn retinas; one long bulb rather than a bunch of little ones. clean design. Nice light and throw pattern.

Cons: lower joint slips; really easy to break the friction joint bolt assembly

Other Thoughts: Workaround; unscrew the lower assembly and sand the friction surfaces.
If you have already broken the bolt, use the one from the top joint and use clear tape to hold the head from slipping while Rosewill sends you some new bolt assemblies.

5 out of 5 eggsI enjoy this lamp

Pros: Useful brightness of illumination, nice white light, easily turned on and off, extremely low power consumption.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: The lamp sits beside my computer and is all the light I need at night if I need to see paperwork while working at the computer. It nicely illuminates about half of the desk. The extension arm holds firmly enough, as long as you do tighten the screw mechanism at the two flexible joints; a quarter coin fits the slot, if I recall correctly from when I set it up many months ago.

3 out of 5 eggsProblems with screw

Pros: Very nice even and bright light -- much better than the "adequate" amount in the description IMHO. The color temperature almost matches daylight, as they describe.

Cons: As mentioned by others, the screw system that holds the top light segment in place is very poorly designed. Despite my manually tightening the screw, the upper segment keeps sagging even when the light isn't touched.

Other Thoughts: I really like Rosewill products in general, and I even explicitly look to see if a product I'm interested in has a Rosewill-labeled model before ordering. But this product has been a bit of a let down (pun intended!) given that the light won't stay where it is supposed to, and I'm scared to tighten the retaining screw even more since others have reported it will likely break completely.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent for reading, sewing & keyboarding.

Pros: Excellent for illuminating a one square yard area. I have used it daily for one year for reading books and working on my laptop computer. My roommate uses it for needle craft and bead making. Colors under this light are close to what they look like in sunlight.

Cons: No cons that I have found.
