Part of Shuttle's most cost-effective range of Mini-PC's, the K54-Silver is ideal for basic computing solutions such as web surfing or office applications in a business or home environment. It supports Intel Socket 775 single and dual-core processors including the Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core and Celeron series CPUs. Up to 2GB of DDR2 memory can be installed and the mainboard supports BIOS fan control for optimal cooling at low noise levels.
The aluminum and acrylic case can mount a pair of 3.5" drives internally and is small enough to fit anywhere. It has an equally small thirst for power with a 100 Watt power supply with active Power Factor Correction for reduced energy consumption.
Whilef the case may be small, the list of features packed inside is not. An integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator with PCI-E improved bandwidth is able to handle most graphic needs with 224 MB of shared memory, dynamic video memory technology and enhanced 3D performance. Realtek ALC 662 six-channel high definition audio provides full, rich sound. Gigabit Ethernet LAN is standard and it supports Wake-on-LAN functionality. A full suite of ports – including four USB 2.0 ports – offers a wide range of connectivity options.

smaller than i expected!
- Pros: Very small. Quiet. 4xUSB2. PS2 keyboard and mouse! Very portable! Includes one SATA cable. Power supply has a SATA molex on it.
- Cons: The power supply has only one IDE molex - this made things a little difficult as I wanted to use an IDE HD and an IDE cdrom to install Windows. IDE onboard connector is not in the best location. Vista does not recognize audio UNLESS you have something plugged in. PCI card blocks the drive screw hole furthest from the front, so don't use it if you have a PCI card to install. Was disappointed with no frontside USB.
- Other Thoughts: Works with a Core2Duo e7200. Multiplier is maxed at 9x, but you can bump the side bus up to 333MHz for a theoretical 3.0GHz, assuming it works. DDR2-800 RAM works fine. Hauppauge HVR-1600 works fine too.
Specs say max is 2GB, but a review site tried 4GB successfully, however only 3.3GB was seen. So I'm sure you can get by doing 3GB.
WONDERFUL!!!!
- Pros: AWESOME!!! For a small WHS or Samba server you cannot go wrong!!!! Great connectivity. You get what you pay for amazingly! Consider a treat for an everyday computer build.
- Cons: The loudest component = PSU. :(
- Other Thoughts: Personal recommendation: add a rear exhaust fan with a decent CFM rating but low dB value and you will not be unhappy with the inside temps. Do not use stock HSF with this unit, invest in something with higher CFM.

Perfect WHS Box
- Pros: PERFECT FOR MEDIA/FILE SERVER. No wasted space. No unecessary optical drive bay. Intel chipset has Gigabit LAN, DDR2, SATA, Celeron support. I used two 1 TB drives. Works perfectly, WHS OS is right on.
- Cons: Should have included an exhaust fan. Buy a loud and powerful one to protect your drives, and stow this away in a cool closet.
- Other Thoughts: BUY THIS. Build a WHS box. Beat your neighbors to the 20th Century. Stream music, videos, and photos to every device in the house. Create a document on your desktop, work on it later on the laptop or PDA. Store common application installers in a central location. A home network is a must have for any self-respecting geek.
DO IT! DO IT NOW!
Shuttles No Good
- Pros: Other than a cute box, there are no redeeming qualities to these shuttles.
- Cons: We purchased 2 Shuttles and they never got up and running -- bad power supply, bad motherboard.
Modding Capable
- Pros: Everyone has been talking about how it is quiet, small, energy efficient, etc. so I won't repeat all the sentiments. It definitely fulfills the promises laid out in the product description.
Once the front faceplate is taken off, there is a 15mm x 130mm gap where you could have a CD tray or all-in-one memory card reader poking through. The metal blocking access to the inside of the case just has two weld-points, so with some bending it can be removed easily.
I opted for the internal all-in-one reader because, sadly, the frame for the power supply and hard drives is not tall enough to allow even a stripped down DVD drive and tray to fit. I imagine with some cutting down it would be possible, and then you have yourself a Shuttle K48 case for $30 less.
- Cons: Box did not come with its own hex wrench. Went out and bought a 16 piece set for $3 and had to use the smallest to undo the 4 front faceplate mounting screws. A minor inconvenience, but nothing too worrisome for someone who mods their machines in the first place.
