Noisy
- Pros: Intel Atom, DVI port and price. Ok for small server setup.
- Cons: Noise. This box uses the 945GC chipset which is rated at 22W and requires a heatsink with a fan. And that little fan is noisy and runs at full throttle most of the time. I returned it for a refund and got the Asus Eee box 202. The Eee box uses the 945GSE chipset rated at 6W and does not run as hot, the Eee box has a better heatsink/fan setup which makes noise hardly noticeable. For a desktop setup I would not get the shuttle box and get the asus.
- Other Thoughts: I think one of the main reasons people like myself are going to Atom desktops is for noise and size reasons. Manufacturers have not caught up on both those points yet. We need small, completely passive (meaning no fan) Atom desktops.
Impressive presentation
- Pros: Excellent finish and appearence. Dead quiet. Impresses everyone with its size. DVI and VGA output available simultaneously (extended desktop).
- Cons: No screws included for mounting burner (be sure to get a slim notebook drive).
Not the dual core Atom (has hyperthreading though).
- Other Thoughts: Also make sure you buy a notebook hard drive, no 3.5" space.
Am running Windows Vista Business on it no problem. Not a tire burner, but certainly enough for basic applications. More an XP or Linux machine (guy wants it just for remote desktop applications, so perfect). Leaving it on vs a full machine means significant energy conservation in this case.
Only 1 slot, recognized 2GB Kingston no prob., they said 533 only, I almost bought 667 to see if it would work but chickened out. Make sure you get 2GB.
Awesome, Quick Build...
- Pros: Small, quiet and cute. :) I had it setup in about 30 mins. With XP64bit. I was shocked by how quiet it was.
- Cons: The slim Dvd and latop HD as mentioned by others is kind of a drag. The length of power cable to devices only works one way and is short to say the least. It's better than the bread box shuttles I've made in the past.
- Other Thoughts: No, Ide to Slim DVD-rom converter board included. It seems made for Sata DVD-Rom. Not really a con but upgradable or pci would be nice for a wireless card or TV tuner card. USB ones are available but detract from the look of it.
