5 out of 5 eggsJust what you want in a mini PC

Pros: Compact and small. Reliable. Versatile. Quiet. I like Shuttle's small form factor and product quality seems sturdy.

Cons: None, except for one driver issue I ran into for Server 2012

I run Windows Server 2012 on it: Key point you must get the video driver from the Intel website . Shuttles version will break the 2012 Server OS requiring reinstall.

Other Thoughts: This is my second shuttle. I like them after buying my 1st one so here I am again... Playing HD to my tv through this quiet little box with a slim wireless Bluetooth keyboard connected. Love it. Fast because I put a good CPU in mine so I could run HyperV. It's really proving to be a great mini high end workstation that I use in my TV room for playing video and serving VMs.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's easy to build a powerful machine

Pros: After also evaluating the SH97R6 and SH87R6 barebones, I ordered the SZ87R6 with a 500W power supply to accomodate future expansion like a high-end graphics card. The intended application is for amateur radio with a lot of digital signal processing and equipment control going on simultaenously using up to three monitors. No gaming, no over-clocking. For the CPU, I settled on the Intel Core i7-4790k (4 GHz) with 16 GB G.SKILL Ripjaws X-series (2 x 8GB). I use a San Disk 120 GB SSD I had on hand and Windows 7 Professional.

I've been dealing with refurbished PCs for many years, which can be a huge pain for various reasons. I was very impressed with the ease of assembly here. Access even with large hands is no probem. Remove the case, remove the ICE2 cooling system, insert the RAM and CPU, install a DVD and SSD, and put everything back together. Elapsed time was about 45 minutes to begin the OS and driver loads.

The system works marvelously. I have seen complaints about excessive heat, so I have been monitoring the core temps carefully with HWMonitor. I see no issues. At idle and ambient temperatures around 25C, the CPU temps are only slightly higher at 30-35C. With my normal DSP and control applications running, temperature peaks hit the 55-57C range. After putting it through an extended stress test, the maximum core temperature was 66C. I left the BIOS fan setting in auto, and the fan's noise level is barely noticeable from two feet away. I did test the fan at high rpm, and I agree it would be very annoying if it ran like that all the time.

Cons: The only disadvantage I can see here is for someone wanting to build a compact monster game machine. The on-board graphics are just fine for my needs, which do not require full-screen animation or 4k output. A disadvantage of the relatively small form factor is that some high-end graphic cards will not fit. A card like the GTX TITAN X is 10.5" long and specifies a minimum system power budget of 600W. Nvidia's GTX 950 and 960 cards are better suited for this box. The lesson here is to do your homework.

Other Thoughts: Yes, the initial outlay of cash might seem a little daunting, but when I look at the time and money spent working on refurbs, I still consider this good value.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy. Power supply is bad.

Pros: Great size, quite, and sleek.

Cons: Power supply is dead after 4 start ups. Had to jimmy rig a new one, because I did not want to deal with RMA's and taking all the components out. Shuttle is unresponsive. I spent an extra $100 dollars for a new power supply. If shuttle reimburses me I might change the one star rating. This item should be discontinued, until power supply problem is fixed.

4 out of 5 eggsAddendum-bad power supply

Pros: This is an addendum to my previous review. To review, I was experiencing sudden power shutdowns. HWMonitor was showing unusual voltage readings. The thought was that the 500 watt PS was bad. This was replaced -> still had the problem. Thought was that it was a bad voltage regulator or controller on the mobo. I replaced the whole unit, rebuilt it with the same hardware. It STILL had the sudden power shutdowns. I took out the graphics card and tried different memory - still had the issue. Finally, it dawned on me that I would not have been able to install the OS with this going on - the only change in hardware was the mPCI WLAN card that came from Shuttle direct from China. Once I pulled this card and used just the onboard NIC, the problem went away ! Go figure - I've never run into this one before. I have since ordered a new Intel WLAN card and will see if it remains stable. The computer itself is now quite stable and doing fine and regains an egg.

Cons: It appears the Shuttle provided WLAN accessory card is not a stable addition for this computer. I thought about a BIOS update to 203 (I have 201), but it really didn't address the issue and I was afraid it would power off in the middle of the flash ! Also the HWMonitor program appears to be reading erroneous voltage values.

3 out of 5 eggsBad power supply

Pros: Well designed system - I have owned several Shuttle computers in the past - appreciate the non-proprietary motherboard. Love the mSATA SSD. The wireless card had to be shipped from overseas, not USA.

Cons: Construction went smoothly and installed Win7 Pro without a hitch. Gave it to my daughter for Christmas, and then it started unexpectedly shutting the power off. I ran HW monitor and discovered the 12 volt rail was only producing 8.9 volts.

instead of breaking down the whole computer and sending it back for replacement and reconstruction, decided to just replace the power supply - yea, another C-note. Newegg did not have it, but I found it. I'm awaiting this replacement.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure if they burn in their power supplies, but it seems this one fell through the cracks.

4 out of 5 eggsShutte SZ87R6

Pros: Compact PC with most bells & whistles. Almost excellent performance except so and so video. Mine has an Intel i7 and 8 Gb of RAM. Using Windows 10 (test).

Cons: Motherboard video is slow.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This is a nice little box that's actually pretty roomy inside, I've never run into any cooling issues and I run it pretty hard, but don't expect some kind of crazy cooling capacity -- CPU and video card idle at about 34C for me.

The drivers are fantastic and exactly what they should be, completely invisible. No garbage applications came with it that replace functionality present in the operating system, USB3 is the most reliable I've seen on the PC side of things, and I've never had any hiccups or bugs with any of them.

It's also pretty quiet, not "is it running?" quiet but quiet enough that you won't notice it unless you listen for it.

This thing is also crazy light! You would hardly know there was a computer in there, especially if you don't have a spinning-disk hard drive.

Cons: One thing I ran into, which is my own fault, is my video card's power connector is on the side instead of the end. This led to the hard drive/disk drive cage not fitting due to the added size of that power connector. Video card is an EVGA GeForce 660 SC -- planning on getting a new video card partially because of this.

Other Thoughts: I have no doubt that I will buy a Shuttle again when the time comes around for my next build. The compact size, overall quality, and amount of power you can pack into these is great.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Gaming Rig!!!

Pros: Very Fast boot (used mSata SSD with Mini PCIe slot).
Heat pipe system works!
Great design for SFF case
4 USB 3.0 ports

Cons: DO NOT USE STOCK THERMAL PASTE!!! REALLY HORRIBLE... My CPU temps rose to a dangerous 72 C. I cleaned up the thermal paste and apply Noctua Thermal compound. Now when I game, my CPU does not rise above 50c (Heavy gaming). Idle temp is 32 C.

Other Thoughts: I am rocking an Core i5 4440, GTX 770 (plays everything on high/Ultra (BF4, Steam Games, Etc). 32GB of Ballistic Crucial RAM, 120gb mSata SSD in the mini PCIe slot. 2TB Storage and Blu-ray Drive. Windows 8.1 Pro. I LOVE THIS THING!!! I recommend you apply Silver Artic or Noctua thermal compound. DO NOT USE THE STOCK COMPOUND, IT IS HORRIBLE.
