4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Two Intel NICs. Low power consumption, and nearly silent, containing only a single small fan. Can auto-resume from power failure if the ERP setting is disabled in the BIOS. Runs pfSense with ease.

Case is sturdy and low-profile - not decked out in bright blue LED lights like so many others.

Cons: Intel Atom has no support for virtualization.

The product description of "booksize" is pushing the definition a bit. It's fairly small, but in my opinion is too large to be called "booksize." Make sure you check the dimensions listed in the product specs.

The four magnetic stabilization feet that are supplied with the unit for use in a vertical orientation are just about useless - even shifting the system an inch or two will often dislodge them.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Untangle Firewall

Pros: I purchased this for a replacement Untangle firewall at home. I have a 100/25 internet connection with 15 devices behind it and have no seen demand go over 5% even with streaming media server.

Installed Untangle NGW 11.1 with no problems.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Makes for excellent platform to build a home router and firewall.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little server, doesn't last long

Pros: I bought this as a DIY router kit, and it excelled at that. Ran pfSense on it for most of the time, then ran Debian Wheezy as the software. I even added a Penguin Wireless N Half Height Mini PCIe Card for GNU / Linux, which worked quite well given the cheap antennae I connected, even in pfSense (FreeBSD based). I would buy another.

Cons: This motherboard died after just over two years of service. I had been trying to connect a serial console, and at some point it no longer boots. The PC speaker does not beep, though the power is connected and the fan does turn on. The HDD light flashes briefly when power is applied (there is no power LED). Since it's no longer under warranty (it expired in May 2013), I will have to purchase another one (or another option).

My best guess as to the failure was that it overheated. Unfortunately its guts were not covered in dust, so I don't know the cause of the overheating. Since I was using it as a BSD (pfSense) or Linux (Debian Wheezy) router, I wouldn't expect the CPU to be pushed too hard.

Oh, well, I would still get another one.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry to hear that the motherboard died just after 2 years. Normally, this embedded class product has industrial grade components on it and should last for 5 years+ under normal condition. However, heat is always an issue to all computer system, it will really shorten the life of the components.

4 out of 5 eggsNice box, but....

Pros: Small, low power, efficient, suitable as a "small server" or specialized box. Works well for Linux or BSD server or router.

Cons: Does not provide 12v on drive connector(s), so it's not for use with a Seagate Constellation 2 enterprise drive

Other Thoughts: Bought this for a BSD Unix server/router box. Wanted to use Seagate enterprise drive, but after discovering no 12v on the drive power connecter I ended up with a WD Black drive. Hopefully the long-term reliability will be good.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat PFSense Router / Firewall

Pros: Ships with 2 gigabit Intel nics, and easily expandable to 5 for another $60 daughter card add on. I personally own 4 of these motherboards (the JNF99FL's) and they have all worked fantastic as NAS's and routers. I am using this at the office I work at as our primary router and firewall, which allows us to split our internet connection off to some of the other tenants renting space in the same building. We all save $$ and get a much faster connection speed! I used dedicated NICs for each tenant, but you could achieve the same thing with VLANs and a single LAN port.

Cons: I really wish the PCI slot was a PCIe! I can never get enough SATA or Ethernet...

Other Thoughts: PS: You can actually use 8GB of DDR3 memory in these motherboards, even though they only say 4GB. Works great with ZFS on FreeBSD!

5 out of 5 eggsWorth Every Penny

Pros: This little unit is pretty fantastic.

Lots and lots and lots of SATA, built in hardware watchdog timer, decent quality metal case, USB 3, Mini-PCIe slot.

And it works beautifully.

Cons: Only con I can really think of is it's on the higher end of prices for comparable systems.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet Mini-System

Pros: Low power, small system, 64bit OS compatible, running CentOS 6.3
Used with 1 4GB SO-DIMM, Kingston Part # N82E16820139142

Cons: I was disappointed that case for this system is too short to make use of a half-height PCI card.

Other Thoughts: Originally purchased as mini-router for offices, it needed to power on after power loss. Simply setting Integrated Peripherals -> PWR Status after PWR failure to Always On was not enough, you must also disable ErP to have the power come on after it's lost... (Power Management Setup -> ERP Function -> Disabled) This applies to the JNF99FL-525 motherboard itself.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent little system for an Untangle Firewall

Pros: The chipset and LAN are on the Untangle list of known compatibles, so we jumped on this. We have ~5 in the field for the SMB clients, about to deploy another 3. Doing site-to-site VPN's, being the primary firewall for 50+ employees behind a 50/5, constant heavy load - the unit has been very reliable. I suggest going with a 64gb Samsung 830 SSD and a 4gb Laptop SO Dimm.

Cons: none. Easy, cheap, high quality.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat atom box

Pros: Great little atom box. x64 dual core Atom chip, dual nics, small, small power consumption.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Great Atom box. Currently runs Linux on my lan serving as a router. The small power consumption makes it an excellent choice. I have no problems running Linux 3.x kernel on this. Make sure to purchase a 2.5" HDD as a 3.5" will not fit obviously. Laptop memory is also required.
