1 DOA, 1 RMA, going try again
- Pros: Small, cute, nice specs. SATA and IDE. Comes with Molex-to-SATA power adapter.
Supposedly supports dual core AMD procs. Fairly quiet (at least the fans would spin up.) CPU heatsink fan blows through holes in the side of the case (I'm sure that helps cooling) Plenty of USB ports, extra internal USB header if you can figure out where to run the cable. Built in flash card readers
- Cons: No agp or pcix slot.
No DVI port. Really big pci cards won't fit. Driver disk doesn't have WinXP or 2k drivers. Manual is weak, no detailed diagram of the motherboard layout.
Extra internal USB header is undocumented.
Some optical drives (with a thick tray) will jam on the spring-loaded cd cover door. (old sony cdu5211, tray is .78" thick, didn't fit)
BE CAREFUL: The power supply arrives set for 220 volts. If you're in the USA, be SURE to flip the switch to the 110 volt setting.
Case cover is a little finicky to put on, but hopefully you'll only do it once.
- Other Thoughts: Failed to POST with the following stuff installed:
OCZ Reaper 2x2gb (4gb total) ddr2 800 (pc6400) memory AMD 64x2 5600+ brisbane 2.9ghz processor. No beeps, or anything, just spinning fans.
ASUS website is no help for detailed information on this system, no guidelines for memory or CPU compatibility. ASUS web forums on barebone pcs are empty, no FAQs that apply to this barebone system. ASUS website was a bit disappointing.
Cleared CMOS, still no POST.
I can forgive a DOA. I RMA'ed it and await round #2. According to the specs, it should be compatible with the CPU and RAM.
1 egg for DOA (I hope the CPU/RAM aren't incompatible) Another review with more eggs and performance info if (when) I finally get it working.
Good But Small
- Pros: Small,Feature rich
- Cons: Face Plate Is A Joke,Ull Need A Molex To Sata Adapter For HD Power!
- Other Thoughts: I Bought It Somewhere Else,My 1rst Mistake.4800 AMDx2 2GB Gskill 6400,500Gb WD HD,It Does Fly...For Not Many Fun Tickets!
its OK, but not great. Definately has some issues
- Pros: Small, cute looking case. Has tons of outputs, optical output for digital audio, HDMI, serial (Yes, some people still need serial output to control their FTAs or other audio/video components). Already comes with the CPU FAN, so all you need to do is buy the HD, DVD Drive, RAM and a CPU without a FAN, keyboard and mouse. ASUS quality, which generally is very good.
It has a space for the full size PCI expansion card. Ability to integrate the sound through HDMI or have it separate. Very quiet fans
- Cons: I was getting constant overheating warnings from the motherboard sensor, especially when I was watching movies on DVD. I had to open the case up and add a heatsink to the chip on the motherboard which was overheating and add a 12V fan to one side of the case. This seems to resolve the issue, but you know...what the hell...this is ASUSes job and not mine
It would be nice if this PC had a builtin wireless card, cause I had to put it in there manually. This case is suppose to work in vertical and horizontal position, however, in horizontal position it has no decorative cover to put over the ugly aluminum chassis on one size, where the leg stand is.
- Other Thoughts: I have purchased this PC for the media center because it was simple to setup, fairly inexpensive, pretty looking, and small. However it was somewhat disappointing because of the overheating, and because one side doesn't have a black cover. I can't cover that side, because I have added a fan on that side to prevent the overheating. I had to spent extra 4 hours drilling the holes in the case for the fan, splicing the wires to connecting the fan, and adding a heatsink to the chip. I ended up with not-to-pretty PC which mostly serves my purpose.
