Foxconn is leading a new trend towards USFF (Utra Small Form Factor) systems with the R10-S4 miniature barebone. This tiny system measures only 282mm x 95mm x 315mm so it'll fit just about anywhere, yet it has all the features you need to work, or play, efficiently.

Featuring the 45nm dual-core Intel Atom processor 330 and Intel 945GC Express Chipset, the R10-S4 is an energy-efficient solution for building up your small home file server, or a computer for remote-backup, etc. 2GB of RAM will ensure that all of your programs run without a hitch while the SATA connectors let you achieve high-speed data transfers with no bottlenecks. Integrated fast Ethernet LAN lets you connect to other systems on your network at broadband speeds. An additional PCI slot adds extra options for expanding your system.

Using a fan-less passive cooling design, this system operates at full speed with nearly negligible noise. Foxconn's R10-S4 is a real superstar in a tiny package!

5 out of 5 eggsHas been great for 4 years

Pros: I have used this computer for 4 years (bought in July 2009) and this morning its power supply (likely) failed. Pretty long lasting considering that it was used almost 24/7.

Cons: Some strange delay (~30sec) was observed in the DHCP handshake via the built-in network adapter. Otherwise, worked fine.

Other Thoughts: There used to be a wide choice of barebones like this at Newegg at that time. Sadly, almost none these days (and for what's available, reviews are not attractive).

5 out of 5 eggsJust in case you bought one of these…

Pros: Very capable system: nice quiet fan, good enough graphics for HD, much more compact than a mini-tower.

Cons: Atom CPUs are not powerhouses, but that wasn't why you bought this system.

Other Thoughts: The power supply is a TFX form factor, *not* Mini-ITX as stated on literature. Get the right size if your PSU gave out.

For wireless, I eventually settled on a tethered antenna, as USB dongles just didn't cut it. I suppose a model with built-in wireless would have been more appropriate.

4 out of 5 eggsWill not run Ubuntu 10.04

Pros: Cost. Quality appears fine.

Cons: Ubuntu 10.04 freezes on this system. Redhat and others are working fine.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy small fast runs Ubuntu

Pros: quiet, small, cheap, easy to work on.

Cons: none so far.

Other Thoughts: After reading the many reviews, I ordered this with 2 GB. It arrived on schedule and came with the excellent fold out instruction sheet. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a 1TB drive I had using my wife's Dell and then easily installed that drive in the Foxconn case. It started right up and I was shortly surfing the net. I then upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 and that went well also. Ubuntu recognized the 4 cores.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small, quiet and stable. Not mention it is energy saving. I have it run 24/7. It never causes any problem. The saving on power pays off it's cost.

Cons: No gigbite network card on board

Other Thoughts: For $80, it is a great buy!

2 out of 5 eggsNot as Advertised

Pros: Cheap. Quiet. Small

Cons: You can NOT use the pci slot without blocking the vent for the power supply. You can't use the 3.5 slot period. All the cables that come out of the power supply occupy that space. You can't move them.
CPU gets pretty darn hot. Can't hold your finger on it.

Other Thoughts: Graphics Index under win7sp1 is 2.0
CPU is 3.3

3 out of 5 eggsSo So Happy with.

Pros: Cheap, fast, runs very well with windows xp.

Cons: Only 1 out of the 2 worked.

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these units 1 work great no troubles with at all the other one has been a nightmare. I was able to RMA motherboard to Foxconn but new MB only lasted a week. Hopefully Foxconn will let me RMA the RMAed MB.

5 out of 5 eggsWorkhorse

Pros: Built many of these for friends and family. Very stable with Windows 7 64 bit, 2 gigs of cheap Patriot ram, 500GB WD SATA hard drive, LG burner, and card reader in the external 3.5 slot. Only 2 fans in whole system, no cpu fan. One fan on full range power supply and one fan on side of case for cross ventilation. Perfect inexpensive PC for the garage or kids. Great for the casual web surfing/IM/Skype/word processing and very energy efficient for if you want to use it as a WHS as it does have a PCI slot perfect for a ESATA addition if the two internal sata ports aren't enough as the power supply is a large 150 watts so there is plenty of reserve for at least 4 hard drives as this thing tools along with about 19 watts being consumed by the MB as indicated by Mr. Kill-a-watt :o)

Cons: Motherboard only supports a max of 2GB. only one internal 3.5 /2.5 slot unless you get really creative with some sheetmetal. They should have included a card reader as what else can you put in a 3.5 front panel location?

Other Thoughts: I use these for Infocomputers for intelligent signage around the home. Whether it is showing weather radar, earthquake stats, news, or stock trends, they run flash without a hiccup 24/7 on win 7 64 bit.

5 out of 5 eggsIt is, what I hoped it would be.

Pros: It arrived quickly and safe. I am an expert at making very simple things difficult. For the RAM I used a 2GB Centon 667 stick, a DVD Multi and a WD Blue 320GB.
Turned it on and got the dreaded Bootmgr Missing and could not get rid of it. While doing my research I read all of the Feedbacks, thanks to the one that put the movie of the HDD installation. I decided to see if it was that easy, it is. Since I had it out I replaced it with a WD non colored 320GB. I hadn't decided if I was going to use Ubuntu or Win 7. When the new HDD worked I was surprised and grabbed the nearest, it happened to be 64bit Win7. Don't. I went ahead and loaded, updated and was ready to go even though it was glitchy. Erratic mouse and very slow. I pulled the HDD and installed a WD noncolor 250 GB and loaded Win7 32 bit. A new computer! Works great. I got it for Magic Jack, YouTunes and email hence the 5 stars. I slapped a Haup 950 USB tuner just to see how it would work, WinTV works great but Media Center gives

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: a slide show with good audio.

5 out of 5 eggsFreeNas

Pros: Setup: built a 4TB FreeNas file server that boots from USB thumb drive. Parts list:
-Kingston 1GB memory (N82E16820144151)
-Patriot 4GB USB stick (N82E16820220247)
-Two Western Digital 2TB drives (N82E16822136514)
-StarTech GigE eithernet card (N82E16833114004).

Kill-A-Watt measured 44 KwH normal operation; 35KwH at Level64 Standbye.

Small size, quiet, and case allowed me to drill 4 holes to add the second 5.25" drives. Temps are fine.

Cons: Only 2 SATA ports (if there was three I probably could stuff a third 2TB drive in it).

No GigE network on the board

Wake On LAN (WOL) does not work with the onboard NIC, or using the StarTech, but BIOS has managed settings, so this is defect in the BIOS.

Other Thoughts: If WOL worked I would make another unit with these same specs.

With the GigE card I average 63MB/s through put.

It is my first FreeNas build, 4TB, low power, quiet, very fast, and inexpensive.
