5 out of 5 eggsNice Netbox

Pros: Very small. This is about the size of a medium thickness hardback book. I've installed it on the back of the monitor. This is excellent for use as a low power workstation, or low power file server. I use Ubuntu 10.10 Server and Samba to file share with Windows. Can also add DNLA for Media Players and Firefly for an OS X share.

Cons: The case provides no instruction for how to open it. I had to Google "Foxconn NetBox" to figure it out. Basically, once you unscrew things using a jewelers / eyeglass Phillips head screwdriver, use that same screwdriver to apply pressure to the screw post. This will allow a gap to appear in between the case side and the rest of the case. If you gently pull on the side panel in between the screw posts, it will unsnap from the rest of the case.

Other Thoughts: The NetBox is small, thin, has a low power processor and the case is made of plastic. It is what it is. Realize its limitations and if it fits what your looking for you'll be very happy with it. One other thing to note is that because the case is plastic, heat dissipation from the fan is constant. I have a 5400 rpm "green" drive in an always on server. The fan is constantly blowing out warm air. I wouldn't expect to put a high RPM HDD in this thing without it lessening component longevity.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA x 2

Pros: Small and cheap

Cons: The day the first one came I install the memory and hard drive, plug in the power and the lights came on for 1 second, unplug power supply and plugged it in again with same result. Replace the memory and hard drive with same result.
Returned the first one and paid the restock fee and ordered the second one (need this system up and running ASAP and couldn't wait for replacement).
Had the same results with the second unit.
Sent Foxconn an email through their site 24 hours ago with no response.

Other Thoughts: I see that another customer had the same issues. I have been building systems for 20 years, and never had two fail like these did.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Small PC

Pros: Everything is great. Packaging. Easy set up. Everything works!! I set it up as a diskless workstation. I am using a single USB flash drive on which I've installed Puppy Linux. Very positive experience. It's small, quiet, and makes for a very secure, in-memory Internet computer.

Cons: N/A

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect little machine

Pros: small, energy efficient, low cost, vesa mounting bracket, reasonable performance if you understand what your buying. Comes with these tiny little magnets to mount it with if you choose??

Cons: instructions aren't very clear on how to open the case, a little cheese ball, but I guess you cant expect too much at such a great price

Other Thoughts: Using this as a home automation server. I added a16 gig with windows 7 and a SSD and this little guy is more than sufficient for my needs. I love that its so low heat, as its mounted in a structured wiring enclosure. Looks really good mounted with the included bracket.

5 out of 5 eggsCompact, looks great, runs Windows 7!

Pros: What an awesome little machine! Inserted a spare 2GB DDR2-667 SO-DIMM and a WD Scorpio Blue 160GB hard drive and it booted right up. Currently running Windows 7 and it's surprisingly quick! It's currently mounted on the back of my old Norcent LM730 17" LCD monitor @ 1280x1024.

After installing all the drivers from the included disk, everything is running perfectly fine. There are plenty of USB ports and a card reader for external media. The net top itself is smaller than a sheet of paper and it's thinner than my LCD. The size of the box really surprised me.

Also, once I started it up, the lights turned on but I seriously couldn't hear a THING! My external DVD drive was several times louder than this. Lastly, the price was AWESOME! Roughly $140 after everything and it's VERY worth it!

Cons: "Cracking" it open was slightly scary for me as the plastic is very thing, though it is meant to be like that such that it is flexible enough for opening in the first place. A guide I referenced recommended using a knife, which I did with ease... but very gently.

As for the drivers, the disk will give the option to install chipset drivers first (then restart), then use the one-touch driver install option for the rest. However, it did not install the wireless driver when I used the one-touch option; so, install it one by one.

Not necessarily a con, but the package does not come with an antenna for the WiFi. The wireless range is still great, however.

Other Thoughts: I actually missed the shipment by FIVE minutes today and drove around my entire neighbourhood looking for the Purolator truck... which I did! I didn't even know that Newegg was going to ship this so fast too!

With my current aforementioned setup, I'm running a WEI base score of 2.5 (processor). However, it really is quite fast and the score doesn't mean much anyways! =P

Highly recommend it to anyone who's looking for a cheap barebone to use with some spare parts.

1 out of 5 eggsTwo devices DoA

Pros: Cheap, small, low power consumption.

Cons: First device was defective, replacement device was also defective. No VGA output or bios peeps on both devices. Swapped RAM, hard-drives, cleared CMOS... nothing. Last time I buy a Foxconn product if I can help it.

Lack of documentation to trouble shoot.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg has been excellent throughout the first RMA of the device. Top notch service, its a shame the devices didn't work... Maybe a bad batch?!??
