Redefining the Desktop PC

Challenging the essence of how we define a desktop PC, GIGABYTE engineers have developed an ultra compact PC with a stylish design based around an anthracite aluminum frame and glass surface chassis. Ideal for a broad range of computing applications at home or in the office, the BRIX expounds sheer simplicity and convenience. With a broad choice of processors covering the entire performance spectrum, the BRIX sets a new standard for desktop miniaturization that makes it perfect as a discreet HTPC/multimedia hub, an ultra-low power PC for the family, an office PC or as a digital signage unit.

Dual Display

With support for HDMI and DisplayPort, the BRIX can power two displays simultaneously, making a perfect choice as a high productivity PC in professional and home environments, or in any number of industrial and commercial multi-display applications.

Flexible Compact PC Kit

The BRIX is sold as a DIY PC kit, shipping with a Mini PCIe Wi-Fi module pre-installed, plus a power adapter and cable conforming to local standards. Requiring only system memory and mSATA SSD, the BRIX gives users the flexibility to independently choose integrated storage and system memory size, without the trouble of sourcing components that are not widely available on the retail market.

VESA Support

Bundled with a VESA bracket, the BRIX can easily be mounted behind a monitor or HDTV making it discreetly hidden from view. This makes it simple and effective way to turn any VESA-compliant display or TV into a full-featured PC or digital signage unit.

4 out of 5 eggsSuprisingly small, perfect for light usage

Pros: - Surprisingly small - I was expecting something closer to the size of a mac mini, but this is significantly smaller.
- Extremely fast and easy to assemble, at least once you get the bottom unscrewed (more on that below).
- Solid construction: I'm confident that it can take a bit of abuse and keep on running smoothly.
- Fast enough CPU & GPU for basic Office/Internet usage and possibly some light gaming.
- All USB ports are 3.0 - I'm not sure why so many systems still ship with USB 2 plugs.
- Super-fast boot time: only 1-2 seconds on the BIOS, and then only a few seconds more to get to the Windows desktop.
- Acceptable fan noise at full load: audible but not loud.

Cons: - Bottom screws were difficult to remove initially - they were small enough that I had to use a smaller screwdriver, but they were in so tightly that I had use needle-nose pliers to grip and turn the screwdriver (without the pliers, it just hurt my fingers and didn't actually turn the screw.
- Drivers came on a CD. There is no CD drive on this computer, making that fairly useless.
- Windows 8 didn't recognize the WiFi card so I had to find an ethernet cable to to get it online to download the drivers.
- Although certainly within the acceptable range, the fan was a little louder than I expected when under a moderate workload.
- It initially only recognized half of my RAM, similar to what another user reported. Removing and re-seating the RAM fixed this issue.
- The only 1/8 inch audio output is the headphones plug on the front. So if you're going to be using this with "regular" speakers, you'll have to have a cable sticking out of the front all of the time.
- Only 2 USB ports on the back. So if you want to plug in a keyboard, mouse, and printer, you'll need to either plug one of them into the front, just like with the audio (or buy a hub, I suppose.)
- I'd prefer to see higher speed RAM supported since that's a bit of a graphics bottleneck, but I don't know if that is within Gigabyte's control or not.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I'm very happy with this system. Even though I listed a lot of Cons, none of them were a big deal and the Pros far outweigh them.

The computer gets warm to the touch but certainly not hot.

My build included a 240GB Crucial M500 mSATA SSD and 2x4GB G.Skill DDR3L 1333 RAM - faster than this system supports but less expensive then the slower RAM.

I set this one up for a family member who will mostly be using it for email and Facebook, and it's more than adequate for her needs. I think I might just build one of those for myself once they release an updated Kaveri edition.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good

Pros: Small, low power, pretty quiet

Cons: Relatively expensive, no cables included - I had to dig up a spare hdmi cable to fire it up.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to mainly to use as a minecraft server for my kids and their friends. I have a foxconn nt-a3500 that is looking somewhat underpowered as I expand the server. According to cpubenchmark.net, the 5545M in this unit gets a score of 2538 vs. 759 for the E-350 in the nt-a3500, and it is obvious the 5545M is quite a bit more powerful. Of course it is more expensive, but I think the big boost in performance will be worth it.

In testing it so far this unit is very impressive for general use - web browsing mainly. It is also low power, using ~15W idling, and ~2W on standby. It is quiet, but the fan does ramp up pretty quickly as the cpustarts to work hard.

Ubuntu 12.04 and 13.10 run on this pc w/o a hitch. I have not been able to install 14.04 daily build - it gives me a kernel panic and crashes on init. I assume that will be fixed by the time 14.04 is released.

I'm not particularly happy w/ the AMD graphics under ubuntu so far. I don't intend to use it for videos, but I tested it out, and have not had good luck playing a ripped blu-ray in either the default player or VLC. With the default player the sound cuts out shortly after the video starts, and with VLC, the video stalls out for several seconds quite often. I played around w/ the settings in the catalyst control center, but have not found a solution that works.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic system!

Pros: Extremely well-built machine that has run day in and day out since I purchased this several months ago. 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of SSD mSATA hard drive and openSUSE Linux make this system one the one to beat.

I am installing one at my wife's work and will have another one installed at our house connected to the TV.

Cons: None of which I am aware.

Other Thoughts: Now, if only it would make a good cup of coffee...

3 out of 5 eggsGB-BXA8-5545

Pros: Compact, low power consumption
Tinier than an Intel NUC
I use this computer to browse the internet at home and at work and some photoshop work. The price is attractive but you can get better performance products for $150 more.
Good enough to do anything you want with this computer

Cons: The fan starts kicking in when you launch some GPU applications ,and it overheats a little bit.
Low video performance
3D benchmark Directx11: graphics 892, physics 2041, combined score 692.
No overclocking possibilities
Gaming at 720P is impossible
Got a better experience with Intel NUC D4250WYK for virtualization.

Other Thoughts: Same power adapter between BRIX and Intel NUC
got some drivers issues with windows 8.1

5 out of 5 eggsDecent performer

Pros: Footprint is small as expected. It performs fine as long as your not running any heavy CPU tasks like video transcoding. Great for a work pc that is mainly web based .

Cons: Runs a little hot, not a big deal overall but the box is more than "warm-to-the-touch".

Other Thoughts: For out of the box performance, if you use win7 make sure to turn off USB3 in bios to boot otherwise it won't noticed the USBboot drive.

I was running win7 SP1 32-bit for this build and it did not like all the security updates to be installed at once, but if I manually installed a few at a time, all of the patches could be installed within 5 reboots.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Option for space efficient upgrade

Pros: Solid design, space efficient, good combination of external ports for USB, HDMI. VESA mount is easy and solid, mad mounting to an ASUS monitor a snap. Much smaller than any Mini-ITX option I could build, and at a reasonable price. Integrated AMD APU with HD graphics make this unit a very nice option for HD video as well.

Oh yeah, and it is quiet, real quiet. There is a fan that cools the APU, but honestly, if I had not felt the air flow through the vents I would not have known it was on. When I first turned it on, nothing happened on the monitor and I really thought the unit was and out of box failure. I checked the monitors input and changed it to HDMI (defaulted to VGA), and saw that the BRIX had indeed booted and needed an OS. Great little unit.

Cons: Would have been nice to get a external e-sata for storage, would also have liked the Wireless t be AC over N, but all in all nothing else.

5 out of 5 eggsmSATA Only!

Pros: This thing is a lot tinier than I had expected. Once I opened the really nice packaging, it became apparent that a regular 2.5 laptop drive wasn't going to fit. If you come into this thing knowing that you're going to need an mSATA, then you'll be happy. I used this for a remote office box at my employer but I am definitely going to grab one for my personal home theater.

Cons: [this space intentionally left blank]

Other Thoughts: I still have to test out linux but I can't imagine that it won't work.

5 out of 5 eggsBusted

Pros: The only person who had written a review prior to me obviously doesn't have one of these or has absolutely NO idea what he bought if he didn't realize it has two DIMM slots. Kinda sounds like an intel fanboy.

While the price of this thing isn't amazing, considering it still needs a couple hundred dollars in storage and system memory, it looks like it would make a GREAT htpc. I do wish they had been able to get AMD to commit to a ULV Kaveri, but obviously there are going to be limits on brand new technology in terms of market saturation.
I was looking at a Jaguar zbox and decided they would simply be underpowered. After doing some reading about Kabini, it sounds like Kabini is possibly going to not be much of an improvement over the last generation. I would rather have something close to a competent computer, even for a HTPC. This certainly fits the bill.

Obvious upside? Size. Decent cost.

Cons: Older process than what just came out. Not Gigabyte's fault AMD didn't release a ULV Kaveri yet, but a little disappointing.

Other Thoughts: I may pick up one of these instead of building something out an mITX board and case. The size would make it perfect for attaching to the back of the TV in the living room.
