2 out of 5 eggsAPU doesn't support DisplayPort 1.2

Pros: This unit has been better than my NUC in that it functioned (I had nothing but BIOS issues with my core i5 NUC and ended up returning it).

Cons: This unit does not support DisplayPort 1.2 as outlined on Gigabyte's FAQ. The hardware port is physically a 1.2a port as they state, but the APU doesn't support multiple stream (MultiStream Transport or MST), part of the DisplayPort 1.2 standard. I also have an issue where the unit appears to periodically "overheat" and turn itself off. It goes to full fans and I can't power it back on without pulling power first.

Technical support seems less than knowledgeable as they blamed the memory for the overheating issue (no memory is being reported bad by windows or BIOS POST, nor does the unit restart) as well, they still did not understand the implications of the above an insisted that the unit supports DisplayPort 1.2. They later insisted that mirroring displays counts as multiple streams. It took awhile to get a semi-knowledgeable engineer (to be fair, I initially opened the case via email--though it took them several months to get the response about the APU from AMD and I had to follow up with them several times before I got a reply).

Other Thoughts: My case is now with customer support, so we'll see what happens. I have several other Gigabyte products that I've never had any issues with, however the technical support response has been disappointing. I'll see how things go with customer service, but I may move to other vendors for my mainboards/ect. going forward regardless, I most definitely will if they are as difficult to deal with and get to understand the problem as technical support.

Pros: I love the size and form factor of this device, and the speed I get from such a small package is impressive and can do anything I need it to. The price was right, and if I can get my issue resolved, I think this little thing will work out well.

Cons: I cannot restart the computer. Any time I do, I get a "Disk Read Error" from the BIOS and have to power it off. I can start it up from a cold boot, and it'll run just fine. The only problem is during restarts. I checked all connections, confirmed that the mSATA SSD I purchased was supported (which it is) and checked for an updated BIOS from Gigabyte. There was no newer BIOS version, however I did re-flash the current one just to see if a full reset would help, but it did not.

Support from Gigabyte through their online system has been abysmal. It's been weeks now, and my support ticket is still "Pending" with no word form them about the issue at all.

Other Thoughts: IF I can get this working correctly, it will be great. Otherwise, it was a huge let-down.

3 out of 5 eggsGigabyte finally came through on the warranty

Pros: Gigabyte either fixed or replaced the motherboard in my Brix computer. The bottom with the serial number is the same as what I sent in, and I had no problems with plugging in my hard drive that had windows 8.1 and getting it to run.

Cons: Gigabyte didn't want to stand behind their warranty at first and their RMA process is less than refined. After I escalated the RMA to a manager and left a negative review on Newegg, they decided to fix the broken headphone jack. The headphone jack is not very sturdy, so I now use an extension cable so I do not have to unplug the cord from the computer. If the other end of the extension wears out, 5 bucks will buy me a new one.

Other Thoughts: I have not tried the wifi or bluetooth yet to see if there is any change. The computer did seem to boot to windows faster after I got it back, but I have no idea why. The default speed setting is 1700 mhz on the BIOS, and I have not even looked for the option to set it to turbo mode, but I have read it can be done for more performance.

The product is a great idea, but has a few flaws, and Gigabyte's customer service needs some work. Some people have had good luck with RMAs and others have left bad reviews. Gigabyte responded to my previous review on newegg and stated to contact them. I sent a 1-2 page email stating how the case was handled and I asked some tough questions regarding the way they handled the case. As expected, they didn't really respond. Their email said I could contact the customer service number for an update on my RMA. I have not heard back from Gigabyte. To me, it seems like they are not overly concerned with customer service (based on other reviews of them) and they grease the squeaky wheels and move on.

I appreciate them getting my computer going again. In the future I will have to carefully consider a competitor's product vs. theirs and decide if the gamble on getting a part that may have bugs or having to deal with less than great customer service is worth any advantages a Gigabyte product may have.

Pros: Small, fast for such a compact computer, quiet compared to a desktop tower, easy to transport if needed. This is a great solution for me as I don't like laptops at all and I only like to use a tablet when I am mobile. Most of my computer use is at my desk and this is a great looking, sleek, computer. It is too bad the inside isn't as good as the outside.

Cons: Wifi is very bad, bluetooth was intermittent, headphone jack broke after 5 months, not enough rear usb ports (hub fixed that). Gigabyte will not stand behind their product for RMA.

Other Thoughts: I have a one of the latest and greatest routers, but the wifi is not usable as it isn't reliable. I have to use ethernet, which is ok for where my computer is. I don't even bother with blue tooth now as a usb cable is more reliable and always works. I unplug my headphones often and use them on another device or store them in my desk, but the computer has not been abused. My phone, tablet, mp3 player, and old desktop computer (has a gigabyte board and was very good, so I never needed to use customer service) have held up fine to the same use for years, not just a few months.

It looks like the design of using only the motherboard to support the audio jack may be weak. They should know that this jack is likely to be used as much or more than even the usb jacks, while ethernet and video don't get unplugged often. Maybe this one was just a lemon for the audio jack. The wifi is well documented in reviews.


Gigabyte has been bad to deal with from the first call to them. The web site says the product is out of warranty. They questioned the fact that the headphone jack was actually broken, like I was making it up. Windows 8.1 shows a connection only if I wiggle the plug on the headphones and I tried other headphones.

I dropped the brix off at their warehouse for RMA (before I had an RMA number, as I was in the area) and the warehouse guys, who speak broken English, seemed quite disorganized about getting me taken care of. Why didn't they just have me go into their customer service office instead of trying to relay info from the back dock to the office? It wasn't a big deal, and I didn't go exactly by their directions to have an RMA number first, but it was a look into how their interactions with customers are in general.

I waited 5 working days for it to be repaired and then called in. They said it was ready to ship but was not repaired because it was damaged. I knew that as that is why I did an RMA. They acted like the damage was from misuse or intentional. They said they do not replace the brix units but just fix them. A manager was supposed to call me.

A day later and no call yet. I called back and have now escalated the RMA to the next level (so I am told) and am trying to get a hold of a manager. The customer service guy says the engineers are looking at the computer again. Who knows if they are really doing anything. Other reviews on this site list the same problems I am having. I should have taken the bad reviews more seriously, but I hoped I would have good luck as there are some good reviews as well. Gigabyte's reputation isn't promising. If they do come through I will update the review. Even then, this hasn't been a good experience compared to the vendor that made my usb hub. They replace the defective part with no hassle and even threw in a new product to try out. Gigabyte needs to take a page from their customer service book.

Pros: This computer is very small, fast, and quiet for average web and office work. It boots fast and transfers files fast with usb 3.0. I can't hear it run when doing most things. Videos cause the fan to run faster, but it is still quieter than my big tower desktop computer. Loading Win 8.1 was fast. I am impressed with what it can do, because I hate laptops and don't like tablets unless I have to be mobile. It has the benefits of a desktop but it can go with you and takes up almost no space on a desk. As much as I like it, there are some major drawbacks, listed below.

Cons: Wifi didn't seem to work well and bluetooth seemed to be glitchy. I have to run ethernet to use the internet connection. More rear usb ports would be nice, but a usb hub is an option. I bought one from newegg, but it is defective and the manufacturer responded quickly and made up for the inconvenience. I can not try the new hub because the Brix is at gigabyte for repair. The headphone jack broke after 5 months of use. It does not appear to have good support and the connection likely broke at the motherboard.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these computers, one for business use and one for my personal computer. They have the same flaws, but the headphone jack on the business computer doesn't get used as the monitor has hdmi audio and built in speakers. I live less than an hour from Gigabyte, so I dropped the Brix off in person. I did not already have an RMA number, but I was in the area for work, so I decided to leave it anyway. The customer service phone support wasn't impressive. When I told them the headphone jack didn't work, the guys asked if it was "like broken, broken." Windows doesn't see the headphones unless I wiggle the plug, and then it is only for a split second. I tried a second set of headphones as well, same results.

The web site said the brix warranty was not good. It had a date of 0001 rather than 2014 when I put in the serial number. The warehouse workers were stumped without an RMA number. Instead of sending me to customer service in the front of the building, they relayed info until they could give a hand written receipt. I had a bad feeling when the people on location spoke broken English and they told me they repair the part rather than replacing it.

I dropped the brix off for RMA on 09/23/14 and I just called for an update on 09/30/14. They told me it couldn't be repaired and that it was going to be shipped back to me. They said they do not replace the product and that it was damaged. Of course it was damaged, that is why I called and took it to their facility.....they tried to make it sound like it was my fault. The computer sits on my desk next to the monitor. I do unplug my headphones often and store them in my desk. My phone, tablet, mp3 player, and old desktop computer (has a gigabyte MB) have held up very well to headphone use. This brix was bought on 04/02/14, so it is only 5 months old and has a useless 3 year warranty. The CS rep was unable to get a hold of his boss, so I am waiting for a phone call back. I told the CS rep that it was unacceptable for them to not take care of the problem when it is under warranty. He asked if it was broken when I bought it and used it the first time. I said no, but maybe should have said yes. If it works when it comes out of the box, then Gigabyte could care less if it later breaks. The wifi was bad out of the box. I had to use Ethernet to get a good internet connection and I have a late model high power router 50' or so from my desk.

Even if Gigabyte sends me a new brix, I am disgusted with their lack of service and honor. I am not holding my breath.............I should have listened to the other reviews on Newegg, as they are accurate.

I didn't contact Newegg, because it is out of their warranty period. Newegg, is there anything you can do on your end, if Gigabyte fails to follow through (as they have failed with many other Newegg customers)?

Pros: Very nice and small form factor and the fan is quiet even at max speed.

I bought this PC for my mother in law and put a Linux on it. The unit boots in less than 15 seconds, no need for hibernate and sleep!

For the quality, the prices is great. It is very easy open the box and install the hard drive and the ram.

Cons: Watch out for hard drive and ram, I didn't notice the ram was 1.35V instead of 1.5V, but that is because i'm not so techy. It is written in big in the description.

I got to get the good hard drive the first time (mSata).

Other Thoughts: This is brand new, so lets see if it last long to give the last star.

Latest Linux (Linux Mint 17) is running smooth on the PC, all hardware is supported correctly.

Pros: Case size is incredibly small...I love it! Case had plenty of room to install the mSATA drive...super easy installation. Bios is good, easy enough. I have it running my PhotoBooth software- DSLR Remote Pro and it runs flawlessly. No problems whatsoever and the Mushkin mSATA drive is very fast. Boot times are extremely fast.

Cons: System gets a little hot. Be sure you have the unit in a location where it can be vented.

Other Thoughts: This is essentially a laptop computer in the size of a little box. By the time I bought the 8GB of memory and a 120 GB mSATA SSD Drive, the total cost was over $400 and that doesn't include the keyboard, mouse, Windows license or CD Drive. So I'm still wondering how much of a bargain it is. However, with the SSD drive, it's much faster than a pc/laptop with a standard hard drive.

Windows 7 doesn't come with native USB 3.0 drivers, so you have to disable USB 3.0 in the BIOS before installing. Keep in mind that you'll have to have a USB CD Drive or a bootable USB Flash drive to install an OS.

Others have complained about the WiFi having a close range, but mine is just plain slow even when close to the device.

Some have complained about the fan being loud, and I wondered how bad could a small fan be, but it is surprisingly loud for it's small size.

Make sure you have a Monitor with HDMI or a MiniDisplay Port.

Other than that, it seems pretty good, but I've only had it a few days.

I'm only giving it 4 stars because of the WiFi. This limits how I"m going to use it, or I'll have to buy a different WiFi card.

Pros: Small size, quad-core CPU, SSD drive and 8GB memory make this Mini-PC a space saver for most applications. Using this Mini-PC to surf the internet and manage a drug plan for nursing homes. The VESA mount allows the Mini-PC to be mounted to the back of a monitor saving counter space in this application. It also could be used as a point-of-sale terminal in retail applications.

Cons: Used the VESA mounting and attached this unit to the back of a monitor. The VESA mount doesn't have a latch or lock to keep the Mini-PC unit from falling out of the mount. It doesn't look good, but a plastic drywall anchor inserted between the mount and the Mini-PC unit keeps everything locked in place.

Other Thoughts: The USB-3 option needs to be turned off in BIOS to load an OS from a flash drive. USB3 drive could also be loaded before installation.

Pros: Very small, quad-core, low power consumption, dual memory slots for 16GB total, HDMI, dual monitor support, wireless N card occupies mini-PCIe slot for easy upgrade later.

Cons: USB 3.0 ONLY! Most likely not a big deal for most people, but I was building 3 of these for use in corporate environment and Windows 7 does not have built in USB 3.0 drivers. I actually put the drivers on the Windows 7 boot image (USB drive) and it would get all the way through installation, but after initial reboot the keyboard/mouse would no longer work.

This is more of a Windows 7 issue and my own lack of foresight, but thought it would have been nice if Gigabyte kept at least 1 USB 2 port for anyone who still needs to install Windows 7.

I actually had to install Windows 8 to get this to work at all which is why I removed 1 egg.

Other Thoughts: Awesome little system...obviously not a heavy gaming system, so anyone who complains about that is not too bright. Overall the 16GB memory capacity along with all the other Pros above makes this the perfect little system for a lot of basic applications.

Would recommend this to anyone needing a small PC with light to medium (non-gaming) use.
