1 out of 5 eggsDefective MB or CPU fan out of box

Pros: form factor

Cons: The unit is very slow to initialize HDMI signal & boots quite slowly for that reason. The HDW monitor is not working or CPU fan is bad. If the utility is set to "on" in bios, the unit produces a fan error & will not boot unless the monitor is turned off although the fan appears to be operating

Other Thoughts: This Gigabyte technology is apparently not ready for prime time judging by the number of issues I am now seeing. It is a great idea, but Gigabyte QC leaves much to be desired. I am quite disappointed to have to return it and pay the shipping costs to obtain a replacement. If I had a choice I would much prefer to return it for a refund & go with a more trustworthy product.

5 out of 5 eggsFastest computer I've seen

Pros: Very fast, Very small, Very low power consumption.

Cons: No triple monitor or quad monitor support.

Optical S/PDIF in front. Would prefer to have it in the rear.

Would also like a nice Nvidia GPU but I'm not going to do much gaming on it anyway.

Fan noise is loud but not distracting. Normal use at a normal distance you wont notice it. At full load you could really hear it but if its farther away and your watching movies or something like in an HTPC environment then noise wont be an issue.

Under normal load it gets warm. Under high load it gets hot but nothing to worry about. Just keep good ventilation and dont block anything.

Other Thoughts: Fastest PC I've seen so far. Boots from power button press to Kubuntu desktop in less than 15 seconds. Booting from sleep is less than 5 seconds.

I'm buying at least one more of these.

To make this thing perfect this is what it needs.

A 6 or 8 core Intel CPU would be really nice. I hope they make a low power 8 core soon. 4 mini HDMI ports for a quad monitor setup. If they could fit a good Nvidia GPU in there that would make it perfect.

1 out of 5 eggsAnother Defective Unit--Same Problem as Other Reviews

Pros: It was mostly excellent while it worked--purchased in early February. Great processor and graphics in a wonderful compact package. Good build quality on the outside. Currently, nobody offers anything comparable.

Cons: Like others have mentioned, it gets noisy (fan) even under relatively minor loads. The BIOS update process is arcane--like something from 1990 but without a 3.5" floppy disk drive. The unit just spontaneously quit recognizing the HDDs--both interfaces. The mSATA and a 2.5" SATA drive both test fine in other machines. Have reloaded BIOS and reset countless times without resolution.

Other Thoughts: Gigabyte online support is a waste of time. Website will not indicate a valid warranty on the unit when entering the serial number as described. Support is as slow as everyone else who has posted about a defective unit has described. Frustration-inducing would be an understatement.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Device

Pros: Very, very fast.
Easy to setup, works with high resolution monitors like my Dell 3007WFP out of the box.
Very compatible with Ubuntu 14.04, zero special configuration needed for any hardware.
It's like a mac mini on steroids.

Cons: Fairly loud when the cpu usage is maxed out during a compile or other cpu intensive operation.
The included print instructions are very vague and unhelpful.

Other Thoughts: I'm glad I purchased this, it's a very competent little workstation.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable, convenient, and performance

Pros: - really fast
- small
- mobile (if you need it to be)
- durable - I've dropped this thing 2-3 times carrying it between offices. I always back it up in case I ever do break it but there have been no issues so far

Cons: - Fan - when I play games (Starcraft2, Planetary Annihilation etc..) the fan gets loud, as in loud enough to distract you from the sounds of the game. Aside from games though I barely notice the fan being on.
- I ordered a couple power adapters through their tech support but they're on back order. I hate carrying the PC and the huge adapter everywhere.
- Fittings - I had an issue where the RAM didn't stay put. Well, it looked like it was set but it kept disconnecting. I cleaned it out, re-installed it, no issues since.

Other Thoughts: Overall for me this machine is perfect. It has the power I need for work and play. I can scan over a 100 pages on my Neat Scanner and this processes it really quickly. I can also run all my accounting software simultaneously without issues or glitches.

I love that it's small enough to take to different offices, powerful enough to replace your desktop, and enough video processing power to play my strategy games.

2 out of 5 eggsDOA after 21 days

Pros: incredible design -- if it worked

Cons: this one lasted <21 days.

Other Thoughts: really excited to purchase this; i7, msata -- blazing fast running win8 -- for 21 days.

i was using it as a media/htpc, switched over to it this morning and it was sitting in the bios -- could not detect the msata or sata drives.

RMA -- will wait and see if the next one lasts, if this is a quality issue or design flaw.....

1 out of 5 eggsGigabyte Esupport and RMA

Pros: size, power, graphics

Cons: Esupport, RMA service, sata/power cable, extremely slow customer support.

Other Thoughts: First off I must confess that this review is for my brother's purchase of this brix. He is fed up working with their support and rma. I've been trying for the pas week to solve the problem of the bios not seeing the hard drive. Their Esupport apparently has a quota for answering 1 question per day and not on weekends. They finally gave me an email address for the service department. So far no answer. We just need a new sata/power cable. Oh, and the less than quality build of the cable is truly bad. Their should be some king of pull tab at the center of the HD connector. This would create less chance of damaging the the wire connection. Although we were having connection problems right out of the box. This unit was sent back to Gigabyte through rma. They kept it for about 2 weeks then sent it back. Nothing apparently was fixed. I mean, what kind of diagnostics do they even do there. Apparently nothing. Extremely shoddy work. So this is for Gigabyte benefit, here is my last Esupport ID message Email-ID: 17064-6. Right now all we want is a sata/porwer cable. I told them that for the past 2 days and no help. We should not have to pay anymore cost of shipping the unit back to replace a simple cable. Also because the RMA people can't seem to find problems with a simple cable.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Support

Pros: Compact, relatively light, almost as fast as last year's MacBook Pros.

Cons: Not ready for prime time and the worst customer support in the industry. Try the tech support BEFORE you order. BRIX makes it extremely inconvenient to get support. You can't call anyone. You have to set up an account and ask a question on their website. It too days to get an email requiring another log in to get a one-sentence response that did nothing to resolve the problem.

Buy from a company that you can rely upon. When you add up the cost of this unit, add a nice monitor, keyboard, mouse, operating system plus the time to set this up, you are much better ahead with a high-end ultrabook or Mac laptop.

Other Thoughts: If you like supporting such poor customer service, buy this and pray that you do not run into any problems.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid barebones PC

Pros: Simple setup
Great CPU and GPU
Decent BIOS
4 USB3 ports
Compact

Cons: USB3 ports aren't full speed
Fan gets a little loud

Other Thoughts: I've had this little unit for about a month now, running it as a compact unit for computer vision experiments. For this the CPU and GPU combo is great. For those interested, the on-chip GPU runs OpenCV and C++ AMP very well. I also have a Point Grey Flea3 USB3 camera hooked up to one of the USB3 ports, streaming 1380x1080 uncompressed images at 60 frames per second. That's quite respectable for a barebones system in this class.
The only downside I noticed is that the USB3 ports are not the full speed ports you might see on a desktop board. In my case, this results in half the framerate I can stream from a USB camera compared to a dedicated USB3 card in my desktop (60 fps BRIX vs. 120 fps desktop). For most users, you won't notice this unless your peripheral(s) can push the USB3 bus to it's limits. The fact that this lower speed USB3 is not documented, and the somewhat loud fan noise are the reasons I docked one egg. Otherwise, it's a great barebones system.

4 out of 5 eggsVery fast, but not perfect

Pros: Very fast with 16 GB of 1866 MHz RAM and a Samsung 840 EVO mSATA solid state drive, running Ubuntu Linux.
Supports two monitors.
Small.
Easy to install the DRAM and SSD.
Ubuntu 13.10 installs and runs great (except for the Wifi).

Cons: Fan becomes audible at the slightest load. Just surfing the web, it's quiet enough though. However, fan is always running.
No SD card reader.
No eSATA connector.
There's no Linux support for the Wifi card (in progress). Bluetooth works under Ubunto 13.10 though, as does video, audio, and wired LAN.
BIOS is UEFI, but still a simple character-based screen (not a GUI). When in BIOS, CPU gets very hot very fast (fan runs full speed). Some BIOS options I can't figure out--the help text is useless, and there's no documentation.

Other Thoughts: System uses 21 watts at idle under Ubuntu Linux.
Suspend uses 4 watts.
Hibernate uses 0 watts if you turn on "ERP" in the BIOS.
I haven't tested the 3D gaming performance (not what I use the machine for).
It would be easy for Gigabyte to put in an eSATA port and connect it to their proprietary SATA header on the motherboard.
TIP: BIOS won't recognize an optical drive on the front USB ports, only on the back ones.
I used this RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148729
And this SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147316
