Great pc
- Pros: small, sleek, low power , CF, supports, 5.25 bay, 3.5 bay, could easy run 2 - 3.5 internal hds
running as a backup pc with xp and cygwin /rsync
os running on CF to reduce power, ram from my atom netbook
1gb ram(from netbook i upgraded to 2gb) 16gb CF 533x (OS) 500 gb WD green drive (storage)
run xp in stripped mode runs good on CF ran great on normal HD
storage drive set to spool down.
setup with a small UPS TRIPP LITE Internet Office USB and it runs pc for 40+ mins then shuts the pc down.
- Cons: tried to run xp on a CF 133x CF to slow!!! got a 533x CF 16gig runs xp but still slower than the OS on the WD 500 gb green drive but great for backups pc at remote location.
(knew this from reviews before buying but is a con) Power cord connector is very cheap!!.. like a shotty laptop connector. works fine as i wont be moving the pc once setup at remote location.
the 3.5 bay is right above the processor heat sink, if i were to assemble again i would use some 3.5 brackets in the 5.25 bay to make cables easier
the CF you have to pull the board to put in but only takes couple mins.
- Other Thoughts: could be more refined but price is good
Quirky but good
- Pros: - Small form factor, can be used with or without vertical stand, and the stand holds in place well
- 5.25" Optical bay gives you lots of options for standard drives, or get a bracket and put in a second 3.5" - quiet, can't even hear it when the fan is on low - low power draw
- Cons: - power connector can come lose and reboot the pc when moving the case or unplugging usb devices (fixed with big lobster elastic)
- some longer optical drives will hit the ONLY molex power connector on the motherboard and make reassembling the case very tricky, as it stands i can't completely screw the case back together as long as i have my sony blu-ray drive in there. - no pci slot on the motherboard, but also no slot on the back of the case if you wanted to put in some additional usb ports. - CF card slot on mobo points directy at the side of the case, like others said you have to completely take the computer apart and unscrew the motherboard just to install/change CF cards WHAT A PAIN! Get your dremel out if you want to cut that slot yourself.
- Other Thoughts: - having more then 2 sata connectors (and a more conveniently place power molex) would have been really nice since you could easily outfit this case with a 4x2.5" adapter in the 5.25" bay and create a really nice home file server.
- the documentation for the website says this machine supports SUSE 10, but be sure to get SUSE 10 SP3 if you want the ethernet to install automatically. - i don't know why they offer this as a single core option 230 atom, had i known the 330 atom was just about to pop up on the website i would have gladly paid the $10 difference :(
Overall for what i paid it will make a good linux file server for my existing 1TB 3.5" drive, but MSI definitely has room to improve here: - more sata ports - more power ports - CF slot in case - better optical bay clearance for molex connector on mobo - why even offer a 230 Atom version when the 330 only consumes a couple more watts but has much more potential for only $10 more?? - better graphics would have been nice
Nice small box
- Pros: -Small form factor
-Inexpensive!
- Cons: -Power button seemed a little weak (sometimes it didn't work it seemed) and blends into the case (which makes it difficult for elderly to find. I ended up putting a white sticker on it to make it more visible)
- Other Thoughts: I built a box using this for my Grandmother for Christmas. Put Ubuntu 9.10 on it without a problem and with 1GB of ram it was reasonably snappy.
