5 out of 5 eggsSolid Starter Server

Pros: HP's entry line of servers, this is one heck of a little workhorse. We're a Dell and HP shop so we get to compare performance, management, upgradeability, etc.. and the HP ML150 is a great alternative to the PE T series. HP's web based support isn't as easy as Dell's now famous "type in your Service Tag and receive all possible information you could ever want" support pages, but they're improving. In our experience the reliability of each series (HP's ML and Dell's PE T) are about equal - HP, however has better integrated management features and you just get the sense that the hardware is more server-grade. If you're supporting a small office, or a branch office, you can't do better than the HP ML series.

Cons: a bit more pricey than the Dell Power Edge T series, but not much more. If you're worried about saving 5%, chalk it up to integrated iLO - and add on with Dell's DRAC solutions. And iLO is definitely worth it.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat server for the price

Pros: Good cost for specs, no problems loading it up with Kingston ecc ram.

Cons: This is a two socket server with 12 RAM slots. The RAM slots are split so 6 are for each CPU. If your ram configuration needs more than 6 sticks you MUST add a 2nd CPU to use the additional ram slots.

Other Thoughts: You can put up to four hard drives in this server without buying any additional cages, i'm not sure what the other review was talking about.

3 out of 5 eggsCould have been better

Pros: Good price for an expandable entry level Xeon server. It will hold four 3.5 inch hard drives out of the box (see cons). You can add a second processor (see cons) and a whole lot of RAM. It appears that ECC or non-ECC RAM will work, but if you add RAM, don't expect the one 2Gb stick that comes installed to work along side anything but the official HP part sold by HP.

Cons: To add more hard drives, you'll be buying a 90 dollar cage from HP which is about a bucks worth of sheet metal. To add a second processor even if you have active cooling, you'll be buying a 70 dollar fan from HP which is a 4 dollar fan with a couple of bucks worth of plastic cage. Without their special fan, your server will not run with a second processor installed. - Insanely loud at boot and under load. It's louder than all of the machines I have in two full racks combined. Mine came with a bad ambient temperature sensor (see other thoughts) and would not make it through post.

Other Thoughts: The bad ambient temperature sensor mentioned above could almost be listed under pros instead of cons. The service company employed by HP sent a tech from 2 states away to replace the part and he was here in a couple of days. He was fast, friendly, and efficient. I was both surprised and pleased with how well HP handled the defective part issue. - About the drive cage and the fan: I understand HP wanting to make sure machines are run to their specifications. I just dislike being chizzled.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Expandable Server For Computer Room

Pros: This box has a TON of room for expansion. It can easily be turned into an enterprise class server with 64GB RAM, a multitude of hard drives, and a second XEON processor. There is plenty of room for expansion and the internals are obviously designed to manage this expansion and the heat all the extras will generate. This is a great buy if you plan on expanding the capacity of the box over time. However you will definitely want a server room/closet for this box to live in.

Overall this is a great buy if you want a low cost but expandable computer with many features found in higher priced boxes.

Cons: Very loud at boot or under load. I mean LOUD, louder than any server we've purchased recently, competing with fully loaded 1U racks. That is because the fan is a big high velocity case fan meant to move a lot of air over a fully loaded case. It is overkill for the initial configuration, but will be a welcome feature if you expand and load this up.

Other Thoughts: It is BIG. It is by far the biggest tower I've seen and I've seen a lot of towers. It is a full size desktop tower PLUS and additional 4-6" "deep". I put this in other because I view it a as a PRO if this is going in my server room. IT has a ton of room for expansion, that is nice. However it is a CON for client installs where they put this in an office space where it is simply too big to fit easily under a desk or even in a small closet.
