1 out of 5 eggsDOA x2...

Pros: nice specs... should do what I needed...

Cons: RMA replacement was also DOA. I tried multiple screens, multiple keyboards/mice, different hard drives and RAM and the system would never POST. It has pretty blue LEDs which work but nothing more.

Tried calling the Manufacturer multiple times with no answer and left messages asking for a call-back. Never received one in 3 weeks trying. Also sent emails without a single response. If they would have ever responded and would have helped me get this system operating, maybe I'd be happy, unfortunately they never responded and they get a bad reputation.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully others will have a better experience than I have.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDOA.

Pros: Spec's sound nice. I think it will do exactly what I need with running an Untangle system. Looking forward to the RMA replacements arrival.

Cons: - Dead on Arrival. The LED lights turned on, but nothing else would power up.

- Having to spend $16 on shipping because it didn't work.

Other Thoughts: I'll post a better review once the RMA (I had to pay for shipping on) arrives.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for a little Firewall

Pros: Small, low power use, quiet, dual lan ports. Boots off USB.

Cons: No Documentation in box and not much online, But it is sold as OEM and was easy to setup. Not sure how easy it would be to install a second hard drive. Very little in BIOS to configure. Looks like if you want to add the wireless mPCIE card or the ethernet mPCIE card you would have to modifiy the case. Newegg please add some pictures of the inside and better specs. I had to take a guess on what memory would work and got lucky.

Other Thoughts: I used this to build a home firewall using IPFire. I use a 32GB SSD (Item#: N82E16820227510) cheapest 2.5 drive i found. G.SKILL 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (Item#: N82E16820231341) and installed IPFire off and old USB stick. Had it build and up and running in 20 mins. All in all a great little machine that could be use for many application.

4 out of 5 eggsDid I get the last one?

Pros: 64bit Low Power Dual Core Processor
Dual Network connections
Small Size

Cons: No SATA cable
Can be a little warm

Other Thoughts: To secure my home network I use the Home License of the Astaro Security Gateway Unified Threat Management.

Having a spare 2.5" WD Black drive and adding a 4GB DD3 SODIMM for Corsair ordered here; I was able to transfer my Astaro setup to this much smaller and more efficient system. This system has dual gigabit nics so I use one for the cable modem and one for the home network.

The 3.0Ghz single core 32bit P4 this 1.8Ghz dual core (translated to 3.6Ghz for comparison of P4) hyper-threaded system (4 logical CPUs for the OS) replaces now becomes my dedicated SpinRite box.

Because of the dual core hyper-threading; this system actually averages lower CPU utilization than my previous system. I also get the additional performance and protection of the 64bit linux kernel which means I'm not wasting a GB of memory as I did with the 32bit setup.

It just arrived yesterday; it is now showing out of stock; so I must have gotten the last if not one of the last ones.

3 out of 5 eggsGets the job done

Pros: Small form factor. Plenty of space for what is needed to get it running. Plenty of open venting. Decent performance for light weight application. Dual gigabit ethernet makes this a very good system for router/firewall applications. Easy to get everything installed and up and running.

Cons: Bright...very bright LEDs. The power button light is bright enough to cause discomfort if you look directly into it. It is bright enough that it will light up a dark room, making it less ideal as a HTPC or a computer that runs in a room you sleep in. There is also a bright LED inside the case that is always on and visible through the vent holes, but obstructed enough to not cause near as much trouble as the power button.

CPU/chipset heatsink has fins aligned the wrong way, leaving half of the heatsink as passive cooling only. Fan was loud. Fins where fan is attached are half height despite there being room for full height fins and fan, leaving reduced surface area for heat spreading. Fan/heatsink issues lead to hotter running temperature.

Feels cheaply made and does have some design oddness. No instructions to explain things, but was able to figure it out fairly easily.

Other Thoughts: Used electrical tape over power button to block light. Replaced loud fan with quieter fan that moves more air. May replace the heatsink altogether as the CPU runs around 50-55C idle, and 60+C under some load.

To further explain the heatsink issue, fins go across the width (short) rather than the length (long) of the entire heatsink and the fan is placed on the half over the CPU over half height fins. This leaves a fin acting as a wall to half of the heatsink so air flow only affects the short fins over the CPU, resulting in heavily reduced cooling capability. There is very little active air flow in the case so the other half of the heatsink, burried under a part of the cover with no vent holes, gets little air movement. Cooling was an afterthought in the design of this system. However, the temperature does seem stable with my current config, it just runs a little high.

This system gets the job done, but I'd investigate other solutions before choosing this one.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Mini Box

Pros: Small form factor, Atom D525, dual NICs. Perfect for home/SMB firewall.

Cons: No documentation in the box and very minimal specs online.

Other Thoughts: Corsair 2GB DDR3-1333 works well with this box.
