Each phone has two Panasonic Ni-MH rechargeable batteries. The model number appears to be BK-40AAABU, 1.2 V, Min. 400 mAh, size AAA. Looks pretty much just like a standard rechargeable AAA battery.

can the answer machine be accessed threw the hand set?

Yes, you can play back messages from any of the hand sets. Use any hand set; Go to menu select Answering device and play message back.

Perhaps I am looking at where this info is but does this base have a cat5/6 jack or is it strictly RJwhatever?

This unit has only a standard RJ-15 telephone connector. This unit is NOT Internet capable, so why would you think it has a RJ-45 connector port? The USB port is for charging devices such as your cell phone et cetera. Sorry if this disappoints you.

Is there a headphone jack ?

Yes the phone does have a headset jack. The phones are also bluetooth capable so a wireless headset can also be utilized (I have not tried the bluetooth myself)
