4 out of 5 eggsLinux web browser

Pros: I bought this to use in the family room for convenient web browsing. It serves this purpose well. It's small, quiet and cheap. I installed Ubuntu without any problems (Note, I am using the ethernet card, not the wireless card, which I've have trouble with under Linux).

Cons: I don't understand how you're supposed to use the vertical cd tray. I actually tipped the computer over to put in a cd.

1 out of 5 eggsNEVER will buy HP

Pros: COMPAQ used to be a good company

Cons: I will never buy HP product . I bought this Compaq with MSI mother board inside . I died in 2 months . Now second week I am dealing with HP customer support - they simply do not service their product . For 2 weeks they are "trying" to send me an empty box - in which I will return the faulty product . SO far no luck for 2 weeks - hopefully it will take them less than a year to fix their product ( The Warranty is a year : if you ask me they do not have it any way ) .

5 out of 5 eggsPlenty Good!!

Pros: I was really surprised as to how small this machine is, but it's no slouch. It's plenty good for the basics especially when loaded with XP or a nice favor of Linux such as Linux Mint. Throw in a 2 GB stick of memory for best performance!!

Cons: None. But to all those amateurs who are so disappointed because it doesn't play all your silly games, just remember what it was originally built for -- It was built to be only a simple, reliable machine with a small footprint.

Other Thoughts: I just purchased low-profile NIC so that I can configure it along with the machine's onboard NIC as a high-performance firewall -- using Linux, of course!

5 out of 5 eggsReally impressed

Pros: Bought it for my in-laws who do will use it for web browsing, web-cams, photos from their digital camera, printing directions, etc.

I'm impressed. It's cute, quiet, definitely fast enough for them, and was easy to set up. It wakes up extremely quickly from the sleep mode.

I seriously considered an EEE pc instead, but I'm glad I went with this one instead. It has a DVD drive, so they can look at photo cds and I can install software, and I looked at the different versions for the Atom processor. This one has hyperthreading, and many of the EEE pc ones did not (which I think will be good for the anti-virus programs).

Cons: Supplied keyboard is uselessly small (no number pad).

2 rear USB ports is not really enough. Fortunately they had a USB hub so we can run both the printer, mouse, keyboard, and webcam out of the back, to leave the front slots available for the digital camera.

Other Thoughts: There is no parallel port to connect their old printer to. This isn't really the machine's fault, but you might want to be aware of it if you need to support an old printer. Easily fixed with a USB->Parallel adaptor.

5 out of 5 eggsi call it a bargain, the best i've ever had

Pros: Small footprint, ultra-quiet, useful features. The XP platform is a bonus IMO.

Cons: So far, the only odd thing I've noticed is that it refuses to stay in Standby. That may be a anti-virus issue though. The keyboard and mouse are a bit chintzy, but totally useable. The PC tower's build is top drawer.

1 out of 5 eggsUSB Problems on this machine

Pros: Small size.

Cons: It appears, through testing along side another Windows XP SP3 machine, that the machine I received had significant USB problems. There are 4 USB ports, 2 on front, 2 on back. It appears that the 2 ports on the back only work at USB 1.0 speed and only pick up devices about half the time. The 2 ports on the front seemed to be at USB 2 speed but, again, only recognized devices about half the time. The machine I tested along side picked up every USB device connected, every time without failure. Another note is the hardware boot up time. Real sloooooooooow. 2 to 4 minutes before the Windows startup screen appears. I wouldn't recommend this machine if you have USB connectivety requirements.

5 out of 5 eggsCutest little thing.

Pros: Very small footprint. Fairly fast. You can remove the dialup modem and now you have a PCI express mine to up grade with. Very quiet. Cute as a button. Perfect for a small office or internet use. A CPA will be using this. He needed XP on it. Easy to work on. Not much bloatware.

Cons: Not much room for upgrades. I think they could have put 1 more ram slot in there. Small keyboard will not be used.

Other Thoughts: I did remove the 1 gig stick of ram and replaced it with a 2 gigger. Well worth the money. I may get me one.

5 out of 5 eggsGood, simple netbox

Pros: Small, quiet, has XP not Vista.

4 USB ports and memory card reader.

Cons: Single core Intel Atom. While this computer runs just fine, I wonder how long this box will be able to keep up with web page technology (i.e. embedded video and sound).
Norton software would not let me register product.

Other Thoughts: Bought this for grandparents. Works great for their limited use. They use dial-up due to living in remote location with no high-speed providers.
Set up using high-speed at my house. Seems to surf the net and download updates as well as any basic machine.
I would definitely recommend this box for the use it is in. If any additional programs are used that are more processor intensive, I would recommend getting something a little more powerful (or building a basic setup with a dual core processor for about $50 more than this box).

4 out of 5 eggsone strange quirk

Pros: small footprint, generally fairly quiet (the fan is always spinning, albeit at a low rate), DVD multi drive works great, 4 USB ports, audio sounds GREAT (no internal interference--hissing, popping, etc.--with headphones on at high volume), quick startup

Cons: The strange quirk: this PC will not shut down (hangs at "Windows is shutting down" screen) unless I manually stop the card reader, which shows up in the system tray as a usb device. This is quite simple to do, but I wonder what someone would do who didn't know to do this. As a side note, I tried disabling the card reader altogether (personally not going to use it), but the PC still hung on shut down. You need to manually do it every time you shut down from the system tray.

Also, the mouse it came with had a sticky left click button, but it was too small for my liking anyway, so I am fine with using a different mouse.

Other Thoughts: This PC does struggle to decode 720p video (you might get away with it if the bitrate is really low).

All in all, a good deal, but I wonder what is up with the shut down issue. An XP bug? Something wrong with the card reader hardware itself? Who knows. I wonder if others have the same issue.
