5 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed.

Pros: Good fast processor, plenty of RAM, and a nice big hard drive. It runs quiet, the case looks nice, and, although it may be a minor mention, the keyboard is very nice for a standard item. Totally got my money's worth.

Cons: The speakers don't have a headphone jack, so you have to plug into the tower, and it was a delicate process getting my old internal hard drive into the bay (not much room in there).

Other Thoughts: I've always been a fan of Gateway. I bought this computer to replace my old one that just kicked the bucket. It was a gateway as well, and I bought it in 2002! I don't know many people that have 7 year old unaltered PCs, so it's no surprise that I came back Gateway.

5 out of 5 eggsA very nice, quiet, and fast machine at a great price...

Pros: Features for the price. It ran very well out of the box and has not disappointed. This is my first experience in owning a Vista machine and, from all of the distaste people have voiced about it - well, everywhere - I was expecting some headaches. None yet. The OS boots quickly and has run flawlessly. Not having had a 64bit OS before I expected some of my older software to bomb out. Not yet. Not one Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) or anything like it. I've considered upgrading the RAM to 6 or 8 GB but have had nothing but prompt response when running any number of programs simultaneously using the provided 4GB, so why spend the money?

Cons: Minor annoyance in HAVING to burn backup DVD's (vs. recovery installable OS on hidden HDD partition or DVD's themselves). "Big Fix" software seems like a bit of a waste so far in terms of finding updates/fixes,etc.

Other Thoughts: Gateway/Acer have done a nice job in putting together a very solid machine for the money. It is well suited to the home user who demands good performance but would like it at a bargain price. I used to build machines for people and can't imagine that I could (or that it would be worth it for me to) put together a comparable debugged and driver compatible box as this one appears to be.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Customer Service

Pros: It worked the first week I owned it.

Cons: It hasn't worked since.

Other Thoughts: After one week, the PC stopped recognizing the keyboard - any keyboard. I spoke to 3 different tech reps to try to fix it and they each told me something different. I had to ship it back to Gateway (actually ACER) at my expense under warranty and they shipped it back WITHOUT FIXING IT. They shipped it Fed X signature required when I was at work. I had to take time off from work and drive to pick it up. I got it home only to learn they hadn't touched it. I called the number on the packing slip and a recording told me they didn't have my PC serial # on file and wouldn't let me talk to a human being. The repair shop is ACER, not Gateway, so I had to call a different #. Spoke to 3 different people (again). I asked for another PC. They refused. This has been one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever endured. They have my money. They don't care if I can't use their product.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat system

Pros: Great value for what you get.

Cons: None so far!

Other Thoughts: System comes with Vista 64, which may not be your personal preference, but it really isn't to bad. This system replaced my old pentium 3.0 with HT that ran XP. Its been a great replacement system.

4 out of 5 eggsOutstanding Value

Pros: Finally gave in and bought my 2nd desktop Gateway. My first, now 6 years old, is a Pentium 4 that still runs reliably after two BIOS updates, new optical drive, larger hard drive, and other miscellaneous changes.

This new one is impressive. I can't build one this cheaply. In one inexpensive package you get a fine motherboard (Belarc Advisor says MS-7399 1.1) with:

- 2 banks max 4GB DDR2
- 4 SATA ports
- 2 IDE slots (one for floppy)
- 2 PCI
- 1 PCIe x16
- 1 PCIe x2 (slotted to accept either x1 or x2)
- Fast WD 640 SATA II drive
- Vista Home Premium x64
- NVIDIA onboard graphics
- Dual-core E5200 (2.50GHz) processor
- 800MHz front-side bus
- Media Card Reader
- DVD RW optical with Labelflash
- 1 VGA, 1 HDMI video
- 6 total USB, 2 Firewire

The motherboard alone makes this a solid value. The SATA II drive is a WD Caviar Blue 640 GB, 16 MB/7200 RPM. The thing is fast and whisper quiet; seems to run hot, but still a solid performer. Case is metal with plastic front.

Cons: Okay, now the cons. If you want IDE, you have only 2 power connectors, so plan accordingly.

No software on disk. Must create Recovery Disks to capture the software. Hard drive has 9.77 GB EISA partition. Drive comes with crapware (Office 2007 trial, Symantec trial, Wild Tangent games, etc.), so be ready to decrapify.

Although I love the motherboard, it's hard to find it. Apparently an MSI with AMI BIOS, but motherboard drivers are hard to locate. Gateway gives all drivers under Vista, but it's good luck if you want to replace your OS with, say, Windows XP x64. (It's those pesky SATA drivers!)

Just to let you know, users are reporting problems with screensaver: it's set to default of 1 minute and no matter what you do (whether in Registry or in Personalize) you get the same default settings after reboot. Gateway CS wasn't helpful with this. Probably a quirk in the OEM OS install.

Most annoying con: The advertisement stickers on the front of the case WILL NOT COME OFF!

Other Thoughts: You get 2 banks of DDR2 RAM; Vista x64 gives you full access; turning off Aero gives you lots of room. (Unless you add a graphics card, you probably should turn off Aero.) If you want more than 4 GB, then you'll have to shell out for more expensive, larger modules, or wait till the prices come down, as I'm going to do.

I've had no problems with the power supply. Love the HDMI adapter.

I pulled out the PCI FAX/Modem and put in a Gigabyte Wireless card in it's place; also added an eSATA plug in back. I replaced Vista Home Premium x64 with a more solid Vista Business x64.

Despite my cons, this is really a nice build--especially for the price.

5 out of 5 eggsSuits my needs

Pros: Very nice computer for the price. Large HD. 2MB L2 cache on a dual-core (5200)

Cons: Plastic case. It's okay, but metal would be nicer.

Other Thoughts: Totally suits my needs for basic home computing.

5 out of 5 eggsProps

Pros: Runs Great faster then any computer I have ever had and I have had three including two AMD dual cores which were garbage compaired to this one. last one runing at 2.7ghz proccessing speed.

Cons: power supply lacks if your looking for expansion however you can easily put another one in I put in a 430 watt power suppy and my 7300GS runs great on this system. Dos have limitations being only able to put in 4gigs but they run great for me.

Other Thoughts: I would definity recommend this system to anyone looking to bye a affordable but fast system. Love it!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Bang For The Buck!

Pros: I normally build (or overhaul) my computers by myself due to the cost savings, but the tech world has reached a point where a system like this costs less to purchase then building a comparible system from scratch.

It's a great every-day computer for home or small business for doing word processing, financial work, and using email and the internet.

It's good for someone who needs an additional computer in the home, a great 1st computer for someone who wants to be able to pick out their own monitor and printer, and not be forced into a bundled system. This would be great for your college student, too.

It's really a solid system for everything other than heavy gaming.

Cons: Windows Vista!! There are no words to express my dislike of Vista-no what the package (Home, Biz, Premium, Ultimate, etc). That alone should give people a warning, if an OS has to come in so many versions.

I also was not pleased with MS Office being a stripped down trial version. (I never understood why Microsoft published both suites of Office and Works seperate anyway.)

But, I knew all of this going in and the computer is still a deal regardless of software choices.

Other Thoughts: Regarding the operating system, I am a hardcore fan of Windows XP Pro (SP3), and I configured my machine to run dual OS with my version of XP until I'm fully used to using Vista.

I've also installed my copy of MS Office Pro 2000 until I decide to purchase the latest version of Office.
