5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for what we bought it for

Pros: Perfect for what we got it for. It's in our kitchen taking the place of a small TV. My wife uses it when in the kitchen for Web access, recipes and multi-media. I have a SageTV (PVR) setup in our house that is connected to over-the-air broadcasts as well as DirecTV. SageTV has a 'placeshifter' feature that allows access to recoreded as well as live TV over the network. I have the place shifter client on the Eee Top and my wife has full access to all recorded media, live TV and out our multi-media content of movies and music, Wen Hulu and tons of Web TV and music. This system is the perfect size and power for what we use it for. Very nice touch screen and snazzy software for a user interface.

Cons: A bit under powered to be called a 'Desktop' but I new this going in and actually is a bit more responsive than I expected. A wireless keyboard probably would have been nice but then I would have probably replaced it for something more fitting for what we use it for, which I already have...

Other Thoughts: Perfect system for in the kitchen or at the bar for casual usage, standard def videos and TV and web surfing.

3 out of 5 eggsA Little Bummed

Pros: Great looking machine! Works great and we're having a lot of fun with it so far!

Cons: This what I wish I didn't have to report! Sigh... We got the PC and found out there was no Disk drive at all. If you buy this machine you will have to connect a disk drive (for cds, dvd, software, etc.) externally. I had no idea after reading the Newegg listing up and down... so yeah, be aware of that! Also, I opened the box and proceeded to read the User's Manual. There were three things listed as "package contents" which were not in the box. One of those items was the Windows XP software! So I call ASUS and they told me to contact newegg, so I did, and I was told that they only received what ASUS sent to them! No offers, no ideas, no suggestions. I asked if something was taken out of the box? They said all they knew was that it was sent to them that way and I couldn't do anything else about it. This was not included on the listing and I have a manual telling me that I should have these items. Just a sad thing to happen when dealing with a company I used to trust completely. : (

5 out of 5 eggsMy 18 month old loves it

Pros: Everyone in my family uses this machine
18 month old - his start into computers
2.5 year old - uses it like a pro, loads his own programs and videos.
My mother - Does not know how to use computers but has a very easy time with this one.

Cons: Keyboard is low profile which makes typing not quite a easy, but did not buy it for it's keyboard

Other Thoughts: Bought this for my son as his first computer and planned on hanging it next to his crib so he could watch videos and play little educational games. It has been so popular in the house that I have not been able to migrate it off the dining room table yet and may not be allowed to.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat jukebox

Pros: Great screen, great form factor. Excellent design. AlbumPlayer runs like a dream on this thing. Great little jukebox.

Cons: A few things:
- The screen could be a bit bigger.
- If there was a remote and TV tuner (ATSC) it would replace my TV in my family room.
- Asus' media software is a bit too clunky to use.

3 out of 5 eggsNifty, but disappointing in practice

Pros: Interesting form factor; solid feel; bright, evenly lit touch screen; six easily accessible USB ports; solid support bracket; well sized keyboard and mouse that are easily stowed out of the way; similar feel to other EeePC desktops; nifty blue LED lighting effects; ideal for use in the kitchen or mounted on a wall for document reference; "light touch" writing recognition program works well; on screen keyboard works pretty well

Cons: Way too many "terminate and stay resident programs" in the system tray from the factory, slowing down the machine right out of the box; no battery; power, brightness, and contrast buttons feel mushy and are hard to tell if they've been pushed; software not as stable as it should be (too many active processes in XP); software not as customizable as it should be in "easy mode interface"; using XP with a touch screen alone is kind of a pain; key height on keyboard is slightly higher than a laptop one but not as high as a desktop model, making it odd to type

Other Thoughts: I didn't get this from Newegg, but I wish that I had. As usual, they had a better price now, but I got this a few days before Newegg began stocking it. I spent two hours playing with the touch screen using Asus' "easy mode" which looks similar to the interface on the EeePC laptops' Linux loads. I ran all the Windows Updates, loaded a firewall, virus scanner, and spyware scanners. I then updated the BIOS and haven't seen the machine boot since. I've used Asus' software update tools before, and its never a great idea to flash a BIOS inside Windows, but if the tool is there for that purpose, it should at least work. Now I'm apparently expected to accept a refurbished machine from Asus. This machine needs a Linux load for stability, or an improved "Easy Mode" to take advantage of the touch screen (maybe a modified Ubuntu load?) It fills the niche for a PC in many places that a PC wouldn't fit, but it really needs a battery for moving the device and for use away from a receptacle.
