3 out of 5 eggsGot the NVIDIA card to work on the ASUS CM6730 except for one thing.

Pros: After some work, I found that it is really possible to upgrade the graphics on this computer. I added an NVIDIA GTX 650 Ti PCIe card and after getting help from ASUS customer support, the card is now functioning and driving two monitors in extended desktop mode. Windows experience index for graphics went from 4.7 to 7.4 with the new display adapter.

Cons: Staying on the topic of graphics adapter and UEFI bios, we still have one problem. Reboot defaults to onboard graphics instead of the new NVIDIA card. If this can be fixed then all is well with this ASUS desktop.

Other Thoughts: When I had trouble with the install of the Gigabyte NVIDIA card, it was tempting to suspect a defect. I felt if I could not get it to work on this ASUS desktop, it was as good as defective. Newegg quickly issued the RMA no problems. But now after several days work, I can say the Gigabyte NVIDIA card is functional and no need to return it. Also...UEFI BIOS menu is far from intuitive, like: "System Agent" what's that? Among other things it enables various graphics options. Maybe it should be "System Secret Agent."

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsPCIe x16 video cards are not supported

Pros: This is about trying and failing to install a PCIe- x16 video card on this computer. ASUS tech support responded to my initial query. Then I sent them the text below in the Cons section. Some say it is impossible to use a video card on this computer. We shall see what ASUS tech support says.

Cons: I have tried to install a video graphics card in the PCIe x16 card slot in my CM6730 PC.

My problem is that when I install the card, connect my monitors to the card ports, and boot up the computer,
My monitors are black screen. No video.

It seems like the computer does boot up. BUT no video, just a black screen.

Also the onboard video does not work when the new graphics card is installed. Again No Video.

If I remove the new PCIe video card, the onboard video works, and I can again use my desktop.

Other Thoughts: I submitted my query to ASUS tech support. How do I install a PCI3 x16 video card on the CM6730 and get it to actually work? Various blogs claim it is impossible. The onboard video system works ok for two monitors: HDMI and VGA. So if that is enough, then this is a non issue. For me, I want PCIe x16 video card. Possible or not. So far just a black screen with no video for every card I've tried.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Take out the video card and boot up your computer using the onboard graphics and get into your BIOS. See if there is an option to set the default monitor to onboard when a PCIe slot is in use. On most Asus boards, it should be under the advanced options. Change the settings and install your card. Once turned on, go to the Device Manager and see if the card is even detected. If you do not see the options in the BIOS, then the option to have onboard graphics working with a PCIe card is not available. If that’s the case, I would check your video card to see if it’s either defective or not compatible. If you would like further assistance, or if you have any questions, please e-mail me at cl-tien@asus.com.

Best Regards,

Tien

2 out of 5 eggsDecent Windows 8 box, under powered, cheap build quality

Pros: A cheap way to get a fast processor running Windows 8.

Enough DDR3 RAM at 8GB for good performance on video editing and other CPU intensive work.

Good front and back port selections including 2 x USB3, One full HDMI and one D-SUB video ports. Supports two monitors, extended desktop, etc.

Cons: Badly under powered at 280 Watts.

The PCI-e x16 slot is version 2.0 not 3.0.

Very slow onboard graphics gives a sad Windows 8 Experience Index of 4.6. And, if you are thinking of upgrading the video card, forget it. The power supply can't handle the load, and you get a black screen for your trouble.

The CM6730 scores well on the other parts of the Experience Index ranging from 6 to 7.5.

Another problem with this box is the build quality. The case is cheap and flimsy. The back port panel is made of cheap incredibly thin shiny metal, little better than aluminum foil.

The DVD drive is hard to close, you have to reach your finger behind the front panel to find a hidden push button to close the drive. Then get your finger out of there before the tray jambs.

Other Thoughts: This computer is a cheap way to get a decent Windows 8 experience. If you like quality, you will be disappointed with the ASUS CM6730: badly under powered, flimsy case, weak video graphics.

I prefer Lenovo products and I wish I had bought a Lenovo instead of this ASUS. I bought this one because some guy with a radio show said ASUS makes good computers. He was wrong about this one.
