3 out of 5 eggsVPN Networking Problem

Pros: Nice motherboard with lots of features.

Cons: My Asus CM6730 came with Win 7 Home Premium. I needed to connect to my work network to work from home. via VPN.
Asus Tech support recommended I reinstall with Win 7 Pro. After reinstalling the OS, the VPN still not working with the RealTeck PCI Network card. I have my old desktop running Win 7 Pro and it connects to VPN through the same router. Same VPN setting will not work on Asus CM6370.

Only has VGA and HDMI video connections. Not a great Video card.

Other Thoughts: Runs quiet. With Asus support they answer the phone with a real person, but are not very knowledgeable.

5 out of 5 eggsA Good Performer

Pros: Performance. Core i7, 16GB DDR3. Even the integrated video out performs many low cost video cards and supports independent VGA and HDMI.

As a simple test I opened up 35 IE windows, many with video streaming, and the responsiveness was superb. I'm a memory abuser because I often have up to a hundred windows open at a time, which is why I wanted this PC.

Cons: The model of the included Toshiba hard drive has had issues.

Asus' warranty position. You cannot open the case without voiding the warranty. This is irrational if you want to have RAID drives, add a video card, or upgrade.

Other Thoughts: I have designed embedded x86 PCs for 15 years and have worked with Asus product for over 10 years. I've always considered Asus to be more stable and have better quality than other manufacturers. I am very disappointed with their warranty position and told them so.

Newegg dropped the price $80 while my PC was in transit. They gave me the difference in a gift card I used to buy two better HDDs for raid and an upgraded power supply - I've opened mine and voided the warranty almost immediately. I have decided not to add a video card at this time because for the engineering work I do the integrated video is fine.

I've only had it for a month but don't expect any issues with the motherboard. HDDs and DVD drives on the other hand...

2 out of 5 eggsGraphics Inop

Pros: Fast computer, quiet, runs programs well. Tons of memory and hard drive space. Windows 7. Easy to set up.

Cons: On-board graphics not working properly...faint wavy lines on monitor.

Computer went to blue screen and shut down once with no error messages.

Other Thoughts: After getting all of my programs installed and the computer set up, I noticed there were faint, wavy lines going up an down on the monitor when viewing a white screen. I thought it was the monitor or cable, so I plugged the monitor in to another computer, and the monitor was fine. I plugged back into the ASUS and wavy lines were there. I called ASUS customer service for help, and was told I would have to ship the computer back to them at MY expense, and they would look at it within a week or so. After spending this much $ for a computer, I am not willing to take on more expense when they give me a broken one. I guess I will need to install a graphics card or send this back to New Egg...TERRIBLE customer service from ASUS!!!!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfectly:)

Pros: Works perfectly right out of the box, great deal for $700, I7, 16gb ram.

Cons: CPU fan gets slightly loud, but no big deal. I might buy an ultra quiet fan.

Other Thoughts: New Egg Rocks!

4 out of 5 eggsSweet Computer - Defective Keyboard

Pros: This is a very nice computer. Worked right out of the box. It has enough empty slots to do interesting things with it. I was worried that I was going to have to add a graphics board for my son's Minecraft addiction. I shouldn't have worried about it (the video, not the son). It does very nicely for many games. 16gb of RAM? It is more than I'll use, but the technology progresses. I probably will. The network performance is impressive while backing up to WinHomeServer2011, so the network port is working nicely.

Cons: In life, nothing is perfect, and so it was with the content of the ASUS box when it arrived. The keyboard never did work. We substituted a nice, used, high quality keyboard, and everything was solved.

Other Thoughts: Odd that my review of two days ago hasn't posted here as of yet. No problem, I can remember what I sent.

All told this is a good deal. If I went nuts, and put a graphics card or two on it, I'd probably have to upgrade the power supply. I'm not going to do that since it works well enough as is.

As to the defective keyboard, what to do? It's not a deal breaker for me, nor is it a big problem. It's certainly not worth sending the whole computer back for this, but I'm hoping that ASUS will just ship me a new keyboard. Believe me, other than the fact that it failed (probably before I plugged it in), it's not the highest quality keyboard I've ever encountered. We'll see how ASUS handles the warranty. Without the keyboard problem, I'd give it five starts. It came with a keyboard problem though, so I'll knock off a star.

4 stars.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Computer.....sort of.

Pros: It's really a very nice computer. Plenty fast, with lots of memory. The hard drive is larger than my son will need as a school computer, but one often ends up with lots more "stuff" than you'd expect over time. Games seem to work well without resorting to without resorting to a graphics card. For the games I've seen, on this computer, I was surprised. The unit is surprisingly quiet, but I can't yet tell what the temp on the processor is, as he doesn't let me close to it too often. Otherwise, it plays nicely with Windows Home Server 2011 over the LAN. Quite fast with the server over the network. We've had it about a week, and holding our breath a bit.

Cons: Well, there's always a bit of rain, and this is the first failure we've had out of the box. The keyboard, supplied with the computer, was dysfunctional from the time we plugged it in. We through on an old IBM keyboard, and we were off and running. Otherwise, there's nothing to complain about with this box. What to do about the keyboard? I'm not going to send the whole computer back for a failed keyboard, so I guess we'll make do. Maybe I can get ASUS to send me another one. Sending back the whole system, for a keyboard failure, would be pretty silly.

We've not had great luck with the keyboards supplied with the three ASUS desktops we've order. 2/3's of them have failed. The could afford to be of a bit higher quality, in our experience. Pay slightly more, or pick up a used, heavy duty keyboard, and you're well ahead of using what's supplied with the new units. Otherwise, I've nothing bad to say about this purchase.

Other Thoughts: Well, it's a fast, highly capable computer at a very reasonable price. My son told me "Windows 7 only!", under pain of death. The consensus in his school's IT classes is that Win 8 has a bit farther to go, and this computer comes with Win 7. He is a happy child. What to do about the keyboard? These ASUS keyboards are becoming predictably problematic in our experience. I can't let it slide by, so it will get one egg knocked off, for a failure out of the box. That's fair, for a good little computer, with way more horsepower than I'm used to at my level. ASUS would do well to place a bit more emphasis, into quality control on their peripherals (keyboard in this case). Otherwise, this computer is a fine piece of technology.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective Operating System

Pros: Easy set-up

Cons: When I tried to connect to the internet, I got error 651. I looked it up on my laptop and it is apparently a defect in the operating system. I called Asus support 3 times. No one had heard of this error even though there are blogs all over the internet about it. The last person told me to just return the computer. I guess that's what I'll do. I am going to school and having a computer is NOT a luxury. This is a big inconvenience for me.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked for a few days ....

Pros: Nice machine. Plowed thru the VM stuff well. Liked it.

Cons: BOOM! Power supply just blew up. Less than a week.

Got an RMA - Asking for a replacement (worth the gamble on this one - I think we have a 50:50 shot.)

Other Thoughts: Case sticker prevents data wipe? Is the inside even standard ATA?

Manufacturer Response:
