2 out of 5 eggsCame broken twice

Pros: It cools very well

The hardware was great for every window in my house, and I have about 30 windows of all kinds and custom sizes

Cons: I ordered it twice and it came with smashed wheels and a damaged chassis both times.

It makes an audible beep when you make adjustments which does not work well with sleeping children.

Poor and antiquated manufacturer support , had to navigate old redundant phone system loop-backs and got disconnected 3 times, then waited on phone for over 30 minutes to get someone on the phone.

There is no dehumidifier mode. The room gets 35-50% humidity, thats alot since I live in the desrt which only gets about 3 inches a year.

The unit does not work without the remote control.

Its a beast, when it kicks on it dims the lights and makes a loud noise, it still wakes my son after 2 weeks of use.

I question its energy consumption...It appears to costs me more to run this in one room then it does to run my large 11yo central air unit that cools about 2200Sqft of my house.

Other Thoughts: This item is not packaged properly to be shipped through common carrier, that's why it is always smashed when it arrives

I would return it but my wife tossed the mangled up packaging

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy this unit

Pros: Nothing

Cons: This unit does not turn off when the desired temperature is reached. The fan runs continuously. Sharp refuses to stand behind their product. There position is that it's perfectly fine for it to run without turning off.

2 out of 5 eggsNot my best idea . . .

Pros: The unit seems to cool well and is reasonably quite. If you have reasonable expectations for portable air conditioners, this one seems likely to meet your needs.

Cons: The shipping process about did in the unit. While the box, well dented, remained intact, most of the internal Styrofoam packing pieces were crushed or broken. One side of the AC's front panel had popped out, an inch-long area on the bottom of the front panel is deformed, and a piece of broken black plastic from some unknown component was in the bottom of the carton. I've no idea what effect the shipping process will have on longevity; but the unit is working fine at this point, but it's clearly been well-shaken in getting here.

Other Thoughts: Given the pain it would be to exchange the big heavy unit, I'm going to keep the damaged one I got. (And it is, beyond a doubt, working.) But it may be that cross-country shipping isn't workable for this particular unit.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's good.

Pros: It cools my medium sized bedroom very quickly, even in this heat wave.
I suspect it's probably overkill for a room this size.
Off timer is very useful. Use it every night.

Cons: Kinda noisy, sometimes sounds like my belly after spicy food.
Not too impressed with the fan/vent modes, it doesn't shift much air. Certainly not as much as my $70 window fan.
It's heavy. Not really portable even though it has wheels. Getting the box up the stairs was an adventure.
It's expensive.

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth it!

Pros: Does cool somewhat, seems to have a minor filter, like the louvers that automatically go up and down.

Cons: Massively ineffective! Unit runs non-stop and only cools the room down to a comfortable level, maybe 72. Even the cheapest of the el cheapo window units work better than this. Insanely heavy, very difficult to move up and down stairs.

Other Thoughts: Honestly I think the technology behind these single hose units is inherently flawed. This unit does have room for a second hose and you could convert it to a two hose unit, but good luck getting a second hose!!! I looked for all the replacement parts necessary from Sharp and it would have cost an arm and a leg.

For a home, forget these units. I have successfully used one for an office computer room, venting directly up to a return air space. For that purpose it gets the job done nicely. Other than a niche application, look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: Just an update to my review submitted before.
Mine complain was - the compressor shuts off after each
5-7 minutes of work for 3 minutes, and goes into this cycle.
Had to call service (the unit is on warranty).
The tech came, and told that my problem is a very long exhaust. True - I had no window avail, and constructed 15 ft long exhaust line to the street. The tech said: it must blow hot air directly through a window, using only the unit's tube and no longer than 4-5 ft. Overwise, the compressor get overheated and shuts off. He was right - I put it through a window (with 4 ft stretched tube) - it works fine.

Cons: The timer does not work...

Other Thoughts: I don't have a permanent drain outside, so:
1) I elevated the AC on 6-inch (4) bed risers
2) Put a short (3-inch) plastic tube on the drain
3) Use 18x12x7" plastic container (4 gallons capacity) placed under the tube to drain

1 out of 5 eggsDefected from the beginning

Pros: Quiet, has 3 modes.

Cons: The unit does not work properly. It shuts off, despite being well drained (permanent drain line hooked up). The same thing happens in both: AC and Dehumidifier modes. Does not matter what setting (temperature/timer) is set. Works for 5 min. then compressor shuts off(the fan keeps working) for 3-4 min., then goes back on.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy.

2 out of 5 eggsQuiet but not great for price

Pros: Quieter than window units I've tried. Multi-function remote is nice but too many buttons. Cold air coming out of unit, not sure about the volume. Does not make any rattling or other noises, vibrates a little but is mostly white noise. Rolls easily. No water issues.

Cons: The duct gives off a ton of heat - expect to insulate it (I bought a $10 insulated pipe duct and slid it over the exhaust pipe). I run it constantly and never feel like the room (15'x25') gets cold, just cool. Very heavy unit, don't plan on moving it much up/down stairs often or without help. Very pricey for the performance. Cheap plastic window attachments for vent, broke on first attempt at connecting so I've taped it together. I saw the same unit for much less at a local wholesale club less than a month after I got it - surprised the price is still what it is in 2012 on NE.

Other Thoughts: I bought this unit to replace a noisy Kenmore window unit for my bedroom (which is cold but loud with irregular noises that wake you). I was reluctant because of the price but was swayed by reviews on this site and what I've read online about these types of units. It is quiet, but for the price I don't think it's a good choice. I used an infrared thermometer to test this device. 54F air coming out of the unit gets the room down to 71F but the unit must run constantly to maintain this temp. The exhaust duct gives off 115F heat so it's working against the unit unless you insulate the duct. I also found that setting the unit to 64F actually made it worse - the unit worked harder and the air came out the same temp so the room actually got warmer.
Overall, not worth the price for me - but I still haven't found a quiet window unit. In hindsight I should have tried a mini-spit system for about the same price as the last 2 window units I've purchased.

2 out of 5 eggsdidn't last

Pros: Looks nice
Quieter than most I've used
Cooled well first summer

Cons: Doesn't do well in humid weather.
Unit randomly shuts off now, after about a year of use, even in cooler conditions, despite being well drained (permanent drain line hooked up) and well ventilated and regularly cleaned inside/out.
Casters are cheap.

Other Thoughts: Was the best I'd ever used, the first year (summer 2011) Since March 2012, it's given me nothing but trouble. That's a lot of money to spend on a product that only works for a single season.
