Can the thermometer be used to check lake water temperatures? I'd like to use it in a fishing application. Understanding the effect water temperature has on Musky locations is arguably the most dynamic of successful Musky fishing.

I cannot imagine how you would use this instrument for checking lake water since it will only read the SURFACE temperature. It would be damaged if you submerged it and so would you if you went under with it in order to squeeze the trigger. It's an infrared beam that reflects off surfaces to take readings. Better take along a plain old thermometer, a weight and some fishing line (better yet, string). Years ago, that's how I did it. Tie a knot in the line every 5 feet and count the number of knots as you lower the thermometer to know at what depth you are measuring.

What size and type battery is used?

Regular 9-volt battery, one was included with mine and hasn't needed to be replaced yet.
