Is this a glass jar or plastic jar?

It is plastic. Not my first Ninja product, my wife and I have the large unit as well and we love both. Not sure what you prefer between plastic and glass, but I can say they are durable and well made. We use every day, and clean easily.

Question 2

I'm interested in smoothies. Will it crush the small nuts and chia seeds that I use? (not many nuts)

Yes. It will also crush ice, etc. It blows a standard blender away as far as cutting and crushing. Whats is even more awesome are the double blades....they keep it stirred up and no settling on the bottom.
So, yes, this is everything you need for shakes, smoothies, etc. If you can stuff it in there it will cut it. Be careful with the blades though, they are like razor sharp ninja swords. Cleanup is EASY. I love mine.

Question 3

can it chop nuts, grind coffee beans???

Probably, but I never done that and wouldn't do that. It doesn't have the right blades for that. I think it would be best in dicing vegetables in small pieces for sauces or salads. Or juicing. It's powerful to cut small pieces of chicken, but cautiously Not to break it.

I wouldn't use it in grinding coffee beans.

It chop nuts easily in smaller pieces but not perfect because of the size of the pieces is not the same.
