2 out of 5 eggsA Fix for the NOISE

Pros: - Compact
- Inexpensive
- Functional
- Simple controls

Cons: - Excessive noise
- Low drain outlet
- Lower-quality, painted plastic housing (compared to KY-80)
- Mismatched remote
- Vented operation forms a vacuum, constantly pulling in warm air

Other Thoughts: In 2013 I purchased a similar model, KY-80, that has proved to be a much better unit. This BPB08 model has similar specs, but it uses cheaper materials, and it has a defect that causes excessive noise, as the other reviews indicate. I'll review the cons below.

THE NOISE
There is an extremely loud grating sound that usually gets worse after emptying the internal reservoir. (My KY-80 unit functions correctly and never has to be emptied, as it vents the moisture.) I initially thought my BPB08 unit had a bad compressor, but I noticed that the noise wasn't consistent, and it usually got worse after emptying the internal reservoir. I'm using it in a nursery room, and the noise because unacceptable, so I decided to remove the housing and see if I could identify the problem. (I don't recommend this, as there is a shock & burn hazard if you're not careful.) As it turns out, the compressor is not the problem. There is a water pump in the base of the internal reservoir that's making the noise. It's obviously either a defective part or maybe not assembled properly. Soleus should be repairing these units for free under warranty, as this is such a common issue, but nobody wants to ship or take them anywhere since they're so heavy. Can you say CLASS ACTION lawsuit? But I found a fix for the noise. I simply disconnected the pump's electrical connector (labeled PUMP in English) from the control board at the top of the unit and wrapped it in electrical tape to prevent any accidental contact. The grinding noise is gone. The reservoir does fill more quickly now, but I have a solution for that, too.

LOW DRAIN
The drain outlet is pretty useless unless you can run the hose to a floor drain. So I raised the unit up on a set of 4 heavy-duty plastic bed risers, and this allows a plastic basin to fit behind the unit to collect the condensation. If the unit worked as intended like my KY-80 unit, it wouldn't be necessary to use the drain, but at least the unit is now quiet enough to be usable. Raising the unit up also slightly shortens the length of vent hose needed to get to the window flange, and it improves the air circulation a bit.

LOWER QUALITY PLASTIC
The KY-80 unit has a good quality plastic housing, probably ABS plastic or something similar. This unit uses what looks like cheaper, painted plastic, and it's easily scratched. The remote is made of a higher-quality plastic in a slightly different color, so it doesn't match. That said, the internal parts look impressive for the low price, except for the defective pump, of course.

SINGLE VENT OPERATION
As with all single-vent portable air conditioners, this unit will constantly blow air out of your window, forming a vacuum in the room. So warm air will enter the room from wherever it can to replace the vented hot air. That vented air has to come from somewhere. The unit still cools well, but just be aware this is how all single-vent units work.

It would be a bargain if it wasn't

1 out of 5 eggsStarted leaking after a month

Pros: It cools and dehumidifies.

Cons: I've only used it for just over a month before it started leaking all over the floor. The water appears to bypass the reservoir and condense on the plastic casing and drop to the floor. Now whenever I turn it on I create a flood. What a piece of JUNK. DO NOT BUY!

Other Thoughts: Neither the manufacturer nor Newegg will do anything about my problem.

1 out of 5 eggsMissing and busted parts

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: Manual says to slide drain pan accessory under unit, unplug unit, and let it drip into pan. Sounds great, where is this drain pan accessory? Not in the package, that's for sure.

The window kit was DOA. Looks like it's missing a nut or something, not sure how these should assemble, but the manual shows them pre-assembled. I'll likely have to make a new window piece, since this one is either junk or missing pieces.

1 out of 5 eggsFan worked

Pros: Fan Worked

Cons: Loud noise when compressor runs. The noise will go away just before the unit fills with water. Also the unit is designed so bad that emptying the water is almost impossible without getting water all over the place. Unit just pushed around cool air. All in all this AC was just a waste of time and money.

2 out of 5 eggsSoleus HCB-P08-B

Pros: The unit came with adequate instructions for setting it up and I had little trouble getting the vent installed. The tech at Soleus answered the phone and spoke to me. The unit definitely cools a small room.

Cons: The instructions came with a pair of pink notices that said not to return it to distributor. Online (Newegg) ad seemed to say no returns were possible. The packing was solid but easily demolished - so if you want to test it, first, be sure to
save everything and don't cut the packaging up, because then no return permission is likely from either Soleus or Newegg (duh?) Yeah, I shouldn't known better.
My major complaint is that the unit gets noisy and about 15 minutes and the condensate does drain properly if you attach a tube. You definitely don't want to accept the idea that the unit will "recycle" the condensate so you won't need a drain pan. Recycle it where - back into your room?
And the water that gather inside the unit is then thrown against an internal fan which causes the throbbing noise that only gets louder.
At 50 lbs shipping and the likelihood that you won't getting the cost of shipping it returned, I decided to live with a noisy, if cooling, unit - just not try to sleep in the same room.
I got some unexpected help from Newegg! When I responded to a request for info about my experience,
I was honest, and not mean spirited, about my situation.
Newegg put my comments online and several other purchasers offered helpful information. The most helpful,
for me, was the suggestion I elevate the unit and tilt it backward several degrees so the the condensate would flow out of the unit. I did so, and the throbbing noise was seriously reduced.
Then I noticed that sometimes the unit would not be draining even though I had followed the exact same process. I used a rubber bulb to back flush the condensate line, and water started trickling out and filled
my container (eventually). I got even more dramatic(?) results by sucking the water out with that same rubber bulb.
It started the condensate flowing and the noise level immediately dropped. I'm guessing that there's a very small opening in that channel, so small that the water tension there won't permit the flow with some help.

Other Thoughts: I've learned that up till now a purchaser should expect to get less for his/her money when buying any portable ac unit, regardless of brand. I learned that the inherent problems with such units can be worked through but not without some ingenuity and community help. I don't think it would be reasonable to expect a manufacturer's rep to say "Yeah, we know that's a problem, here's what to do!"
If I find a review source that is clearly unbiased about these things, I'll share it. I hope others will do the same.
Oh, and unless you've got money to burn, buy such items at a local store with a clear return policy. It's worth the extra bucks. And always hold onto the packaging, even if you have to share someone's storage facility to do so :0)

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Small footprint, nice looking, easy to use

Cons: Loud, difficult to drain, poor customer service

Other Thoughts: We were really hoping this unit would work out after reading some of the negative reviews. Unfortunately we also received a defective unit. The item arrived with a cracked frame on the rear filter. I contacted Soleus Air and their customer service agent was going to check to see if a replacement part is available and call me back since this was one of their newer models. I never received a call back after a few days, so I followed up and called back and left a message for her to call me back regarding the status. I never ended up receiving a call back, but that didn't really matter since the unit started making weird grinding and gurgling noises. I tried adding some water in the drain plug like some of the other reviewers suggested, which helped a little. The noise is so loud and unbearable. We had no choice but to return the defective item back for a refund. Luckily Newegg was great and took care of everything.

1 out of 5 eggsQC problems with Soleus as a whole

Pros: Great price and units I bought before from Soleus have worked well. It's also designed fairly well and easy to set up and move around.

Cons: Although it did a great job blowing air, the air was not cold nor did it dehumidify. The compressor was chugging along and then I got the E4 error. This shouldn't happen right out of the box. I bought a similar Soleus 8000btu portable model the year before from Newegg and it was great. I think the difference is that this one was made by Soleus themselves. The one I got last year was made by Gree for Soleus. Guess who does the better job at making air conditioners that work?

Soleus definitely has a lot of QC issues with what I've been reading. Many people who got this unit at different places are reporting the same problems so it's definitely a lack of QC and a design engineering issue. They must have figured to remove some parts to lower cost; I would say a bad idea considering their past units were so good. Right now I would have to stay away from this product as it will just be a headache.

Other Thoughts: Although I give Soleus a 1 star rating here, Newegg always rocks and makes it easy for returns!

1 out of 5 eggsOne Year Only!

Pros: Cold air for the first year.

Cons: I have went through two of these units. Both stop cooling after the first year. Never again. I also have a window unit that has lasted for five years, why can't these units last at least that long? The first unit quit luckily within the first year warranty, but with shipping back to the manufacture half the cost of the unit, I do not see the benefit of the warranty.

Other Thoughts: Stay away from these units. They are priced low for quantity not quality. Look elsewhere for an air conditioner.
Buyer Beware.

1 out of 5 eggsSOLEUS AIR BPB08

Pros: It puts out a good amount of cool air, has a remote, and 2 adjustable directional fins to direct the air out.

I have a Soleus KY-80 that I bought from Newegg 3 years ago and have had no problems with it. This BPB08 is suppose to be a newer version of that unit.

Cons: The unit gives out a loud rattling noise - much too loud to live with. I called Soleus support and they told me it is a defective unit and to return it.

I am in the process of returning my 3rd unit. All with the same loud rattling noise problem and each time Soleus Support said it was a defective unit..... The 3rd unit was a used or repaired unit, not a new unit - not a fault of Newegg. 5 stars to Newegg Customer Service.

This is a design problem - see Other Thoughts.

Other Thoughts: I read a review on another website that said the rattling noise only happens when the water in the unit is evaporated out. I tried adding 3-4 cups of water to it through the drain hose in the back/bottom of the unit. Sure enough the rattling noise went away. After 1-2 hours the water was evaporated away and the rattling started again.

This confirms that it is a design problem within the unit.
