This review is from: TYAN S2912G2NR Extended ATX Server Motherboard Dual 1207(F) NVIDIA nForce Professional 3600 DDR2 667
Pros:
Inexpensive. 4 dimms/socket. Supports QC after bios update.
6 sata ports.
Simple (non Windows based) Bios flashing (yes a Pro comment) I flashed the bios with a USB floppy ( I was surprised that (USB boot) worked with the 1.0 bios that was installed.
Meh, no doubt it's a tough job to fit 2 socket 8 dimm, PCIe, 6 sata on a eATX MB. Kudos Tyan - minus the cons below....
Cons:
Power requirements. - I too have been able to power on with only the 20+4 and the 4 pin power connectors. I suspect if you were maxed out with 2 Opteron 2222SE parts +120W each, 8 dimms, and a beefy x16 PCIe card (that does not have a separate 6 pin power connector) you might need all 3 power connections.
I bought a Rosewill 600W supply with 20+4, 4pin, and the 8pin power connectors.
The 8/16 lane PCIe ports are so close together, you can only use one or the other.
4.1" Mounting pitch for Heatsinks. (I can only find 1 4.1 heatsink that fits the requirements on newegg.
Overall Review:
I've got to get another CR2032 battery, the one with the unit is dead I think. (It won't keep any bios config data after a power off)
Ubuntu 7.10/win2k8 load w/o issue. Ubuntu 8.10 and OpenSolaris both have issues with the 3600 Northbridge.
