5 out of 5 eggs Possibly best RTS ever. 12/09/2009

This review is from: Company of Heroes Gold Edition PC Game

Pros:

Grab a seat. Make some coffee. Get comfortable. The Pros List might take a while.

Graphics: For those of us who are shallow and like seeing pretty things on screen, this game comes through in spades. Excellent graphics! (Can you believe its 3 years old?) Pretty explosions, great Flamethrower effect, and best of all, just about any current machine can run it at highest settings, due to the age of the game. Only copious amounts of artillery have any chance of slowing you down.

Sound: Music is okay. Not the best, not the inspirational H3 soundtrack, but still, it suffices. Voice acting is often funny (This reminds me of basic training... I hated basic training.) but can also be very powerful, and not in a cheesy way, but in a "wow I cannot believe I just sent that infantry squad to their deaths" way. Best part of sound is by far the explosions though. The crumbling buildings, the thundering artillery, and the crack of snipers resound throughout the most exhilarating games ever play

Cons:

Cons: Just kidding, more pros.

Gameplay: Certainly the most important and enjoyable aspect of this game is the gameplay. I know that sounds redundant, but this game never plays exactly the same twice. 3 different specialties for each of 4 playable races leave 12 different possibilities for "armies". The destructible terrain, completely destroyable buildings, intense city fights, and all the little touches that Relic added make this game so enjoyable to play. The little touches that I mention include the fact that the craters that are made by artillery can provide cover for whoever jumps into them, or when you shoot engineers with flamethrowers, they run a risk of bursting into flames.

Cover: This element of gameplay gets a separate bit. You can build sandbags and barricades to provide strong cover, dive into craters or get behind fences for medium cover, or capture a building and set up fortifications inside.

AI: Just fantastic. Challenging. Really just excellent. Nothing le

Overall Review:

More Pros:

Multiplayer: Excellent. The ability to add friends and join their games, lots of maps, decent player base, and an auto match function make sure you get exactly what you are looking for.

Map Making: Yes, it comes with a map editor! I am not sure what that means for some people, but if anyone out there is a creative mind and needs an outlet, you can make some beautiful, custom tailored maps quite easily. The advantage of this is that you can make a map to play the game you want it to play. Like bridges? Add bridges. Like cities? Make some. The ease of use and depth of this map-editor makes it my favorite.

Okay. I'm done with the Pros.

Cons: Yes. It's true. There are patching issues. You MAY have to reinstall the game once or twice.

Conclusion: I have owned this game for several years, and it has had its ups and downs, but I vouch for it completely. I can't say that it has never failed me, but a simple reinstall will get you back into your soon-to-be favorite
