4 out of 5 eggs Great product, questionable support 12/25/2009

This review is from: LG N4B1N Diskless System 4 Bay Super Multi NAS with Built-in Blu-ray Rewriter

Pros:

Easy to set up out of the box, 15 minutes from packaging to start-up. Drives fit well and securely. Very quiet unit and does not get hot. Software works, but lacks some functionality (see below). Simple to set up individual disks or RAID arrays of 0, 1, 5, or 10 variety.

Easy to set up to use remotely (through the internet).

A high level of expertise is NOT required to use this unit, very plug and play for basic functionality as a NAS. Still has some capabilities beyond what the included documentation supports.

Cons:

Support. As of Christmas 2009 there is still no support on LGs US website for this unit at all. Speaking German will only get you so far as well.

Documentation. The users manual is long, but it does not appear to have been competently edited in English and does not cover all features. iTunes sharing is addressed but no clue given as to how to accomplish it.

Firmware. Installed firmware is well off from what it should be. Updating to the latest firmware will allow you to connect at Gb speeds, otherwise you are locked at 100Mbps no matter your other hardware.

Software. Very plain vanilla and not very descriptive of what it does, you will have to play with it to figure a few of the more advanced features out.

Overall Review:

Understanding this unit would take time to format and be ready I set it up and let it run all night before expecting to use it. This allowed the unit to format the hard drives and ready the unit for operation. I installed four Seagate 1Tb drives, all of which I bought from Newegg and all of which worked on arrival, no failures. I have used two of these drives 24/7 for most of a year and have not had the failure issues other users have complained of.

Writing in RAID 10 mode did seem a little slow, however I was using my wireless N connection to the network and a little investigation revealed that to be the bottleneck.

Updating the firmware to the latest (Google N4B1 firmware 3967) is a must. This takes care of a few of the problems brought up in other reviews.

Thinking the blu-ray drive was built to be used as anything other than a mass storage backup/restore device is foolish. This is NAS - that means Network Attached Storage, NOT multi-function device for the network.
