4 out of 5 eggs Zippy, cost effective zfs cache drive 01/07/2011

This review is from: SAMSUNG 470 Series 2.5" 64GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-5PA064/US

Pros:

* Pretty fast
* Pretty looks
* Good price/performance/reliability ratio

Cons:

* Maybe not as fast as sandforce
* No mounting hardware

Overall Review:

I added this drive to my home storage server for use as l2arc. In this configuration it sits in front of a spinning rust raidz to serve as cache for random reads.

I have absolutely no complaints about this drive; it works as expected. When the cache is warm and reads are mostly coming off the SSD, I seem to max out around 100 MB/second which is a substantial improvement over uncached read speeds (which can dip very low for random workloads). Now this is somewhat slower than I had anticipated, and I'm guessing it's a limitation of my oldish system board + sata controller combination.

Given that, I wouldn't draw general performance conclusions from this; it's entirely possible you'll see better performance in a more typical configuration. At any rate, 100 MB/s is darn near the theoretical throughput of NFS on gigabit ethernet, so it's more than adequate as an l2arc cache drive in such a configuration.

This drive didn't include mounting hardware. I just velcro'd it to my case.
