Quirky Install - Happy Results 02/14/2012
This review is from: Rosewill RC-701 - 5.1-Channel Sound Card with PCI-Interface
Pros:
Performs as advertised, straightforward hardware installation, good sound, flexible selection of output (stereo, quadraphonic, 5.1, or 7.1), works well with Windows 7 64-bit
Cons:
Driver is difficult to install
Overall Review:
I purchased this card as the motherboard sound chips suffered a fatality on an HP mini tower. The board went in easily enough. On powering up, the system found the new hardware but Windows Update found no driver. I used the driver from the CD keeping in mind that I had to find the correct one (there are three on the CD) for this model. The executable driver installer took a LONG time to do its Kung-fu then hung at the end. I had to force quit the installer using Task Manager. When I went to reboot, the computer hung forcing me to manually power it down. On the reboot, sound was fine. The new card operates just fine under the normal Windows Sound Control Panel using the Windows volume control. So...all was well but what a trip to get there. Had the driver installed without crashing and forcing a cold reboot, I would give it 5-stars. A nice way to fix a computer with dead sound and quite cost effective.
