5 out of 5 eggs Excellent for a small business not for a home 02/25/2012

This review is from: Cisco Small Business RV220W-A-K9-NA Network Security Firewall wired and wireless connectivity for a small office

Pros:

Let me begin with that this is a business product pure and simple. If you are looking for a home use router, then this product is not for you. It was never designed for home use. There are "faster" home routers, but cannot handle heavy multiple loads or boast this level of security. It was designed to harness the features of a server and host multiple clients without incident. Now that that's out of the way, here's the review. This router works in unison with our servers (2008R2) and other Cisco access points. It has been incredibly stable and the secured wireless connections have been flawless. As a RADIUS client we've had absolutely no problems whatsover. All hardware accelerated VPN connections have worked as well. The WAN to LAN throughput is ridiculously quick. The whole point of this router is to have simultaneous multiple clients connected to the server without a degradation in performation, stability and security. Finally, there is a cornucopia of security features.

Cons:

Reboots are painfully long. 1-3mins is far too long for configuration changes. Page loading is also very, very slow. Turning the Wifi radio off does NOT disable the radio even though it says it does. Make sure you keep the security on even if you "turn" off the radio. Wifi is an either or situation. Either 2Ghz or 5Ghz. Setup can be very complex; the product is geared towards corporate IT. While you can get it to work in a "home" setting pretty quickly, you'd be missing out on the key features of this unit that a server environment provides. Why would you "really" need a VLAN in your house?

Overall Review:

The unit is made of metal! Has a convenient On/Off switch which is really handy (no need to unplug). Has multiple SSIDs for different WiFi networks. Can create an isolated guest environment if you need it and isolate it as well. Has individual port control on the switch. You can set up VLANs. Supports several VPN tunnel configurations. Has extensive logging capabilities to zero in on potential problems, threats or performance issues.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi N/A,

Thanks you for your in depth review. We are glad that you like all the security features that the RV220W provides. If you happen to need anything else for your router, please check out the Cisco Small Business Support Community here: https://supportforums.cisco.com/community/netpro/small-business.
