3 out of 5 eggs It's not all doom and gloom 11/19/2012

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8 Professional Upgrade

Pros:

Being your run of the mill user. I can't find a lot to hate about Windows 8 Pro. I'm not sure about the direction Windows is headed though.

I feel like I'm using a phone or tablet OS about 90% of the time. At first I really hated this aspect of Win 8 Pro. However, after getting use to the "live tiles", It's ok.

I've never cared for phone OS's though and this is what Win 8 feels like in a lot of ways. It's all in the feel that I get lost.

You still have your traditional desktop but I find myself using it less and less, since I can do everything from Start.

However, if I only had the Start menu for all of my programs and management, it would make me sick, it's comforting to be able to switch back and forth between the Desktop and Start.

The bonus for Win 8 Pro though is consistency, you'll have pretty much the same or a 'similar' OS across any Windows device you have.

A little bonus for current XBL users, there is some nice integration of XBL tools. Microsoft needs to revisit their XBL terms though.

Especially for PC users. Who wants to pay a yearly sub when any game outside of a typical MMO is free to play.

So... if you don't have a current XBL tag, you're forced into some dumb random generated name and the only way to change it is by buying a yearly or monthly sub. This only hurts Microsoft Games For Windows Live. Most people simply will not buy a game that uses the service. Who wants to pay for a service that has always been free.

Take a note from the mega PC gaming hub known as Steam. Steam constantly gives a lot back to their consumers. Through yearly, weekly and monthly sales. The service is free with a game purchase. If MS is serious about the PC gaming space, they have all the resources in the world to make a service every bit as good and free as Steam is.

Cons:

A little worried in the direction this whole App craze is headed. Worried that websites that I'm use to being free will have a wonderful little fee attached to them before I can use them. ONLY 2.99 yadda yadda. Nickle and diming ya to death. Microsoft can be a very giving company and in that some token be very greed oriented machine.

XBL for PC users not free.

Concerns about the direction of 'Apps' and fee driven internet.

Overall Review:

If you like Windows 7 and are happy, it's probably just best to stick with 7. If you like to adapt new tech, go for 8.
