ASRock Z77 Pro4-M LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
  • Intel Z77
  • Core i7 / i5 / i3 (LGA1155)
  • DDR3 2800+(OC)/2400(OC)

Pros:

Loving everything about this motherboard... but...

Cons:

...my motherboard's audio is broken. Maybe a bad audio jack. When the PC goes through POST there is a persistent "white noise" coming out through the speakers. It's not even in Windows yet so this is not an operating system issue. Did a load of troubleshooting. Flashed latest BIOS version available. Checked and reseated components (CPU, memory, graphics). Cycled through each memory stick one at a time using A1 slot. Reset CMOS. Noticed with headphones plugged into front panel the white noise is heard as well. Unplugged front panel audio header from case. Swapped audio cables. Used different speakers. Removed power supply from motherboard for a minute to discharge. Problem still persists. Disabled audio in BIOS and white noise is still heard even though disabled! Troubleshooted Windows anyways for the hell of it. Uninstalled Realtek drivers & rebooted (default Microsoft HD audio drivers installed). Still white noise. Reinstalled Realtek drivers. Tried drivers on included CD and also downloaded drivers through Asrock's website. Still white noise. Installed fresh Windows 8 Pro 64-bit on a separate drive. Problem still persists. When sound tests are done, faint audible crackling noise is heard. Couldn't find anyone else with a problem exactly like mines. Just ... unlucky I guess.

Overall Review:

Other than the audio problem, the motherboard works just fine! LOL ... fast boots, rock solid and stable, no errors or blue screens, Windows thinks my audio is working just fine. I'd give this 5 eggs if not for the audio troubles but I probably got a dud this time. Will RMA this m/b back and get another one. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt and calling this incident a fluke.
