Synology DS1513+ 11/27/2013
This review is from: Synology DS1513+ Network Storage
Pros:
Performs as advertised. Literally does everything a consumer and small business could imagine a need from a NAS. I got it for the iSCSI and virtualization support. Loads of other apps that work great and can be updated. 4 NICs allow for LACP and multiple VLANs. Everything just worked straight out of the box. The GUI is easy to use and get it up and running. If you have advanced technical knowledge it enables the higher end features and customizations easily. Love this product.
Cons:
Can be tricky to find a switch that works with LACP, link aggregation. Follow their compatibility chart. I found a cheap one elsewhere that supposedly supported it. It did, but only after a firmware flash. Not Synology's problem though that is a switch issue. No real cons with the device itself. Love it so far.
Overall Review:
Make sure you get a battery backup on their supported list and configure the autoshutdown on powerloss. If you leave write caching on (which you should for performance) you can lose data if the power goes out, which could potentially lose all your data. No biggie if you have the UPS on and it shut the system down when the battery get's low. Also good idea to get NAS aware hard drives like Western Digital Reds. I used 5 - 4 TB drives for usable space of about 14 TB when RAID 5. I use this for my file server, and also for iSCSI storage for my Hyper-V cluster. Love the MPIO it supports. Great for my home lab and testing stuff. This thing just works and easily at that.
