This review is from: ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB 950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
Pros:
-Price is right, especially if you get it on sale
-970 chipset
-Does have a heatsink unlike the inferior LE version of this board
-Wasn't sure about the UEFI BIOS at first, but now that I'm used to it I love it.
Cons:
1st board shipped had a broken heatsink - it was detached from the board with a broken pushpin sitting in the static bag. Reading other reviews here I see others have had the same problem.
There is a blast of white noise when the board shuts down. I've heard these boards have had some audio failure so I'm concerned but so far the actual audio works just fine
Overall Review:
Lets face it, in the world of electronics - and online shopping that requires shipping - you always run the risk of an occasional DOA, failure, or damage. And with that said, this is the first time I've had a defective ASUS product, and with damage is it the fault of ASUS, Newegg, or Purolator for a damaged product? So not worth deducting an egg as it's hard to say when the damage occurred.
It only has two onboard USB 3.0 connects - not a con though as I knew this when I bought the board. If you want more, buy a different board.
I have an FX 6300 with a simple OC to 4100 and the boards heatsink seems to handle that OK - I also have a 212 EVO in push pull cooling it though, and 7 case fans
The board recognized my RAM right away even though it wasn't on the recommended RAM list - the RAM is GSKill Ripjaws 8Gb model F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM ; it recognized it at the correct speed but the wrong timings. It's pretty simple though to just set the RAM profile manually in the BIOS and now it works at rated speed and timings.
Kudos to Adrian and Newegg for dealing with the broken board promptly and getting a new one out to me quickly
My specs
FX 6300 OC'd to 4100 Mhz
8 Gb GSKill Ripjaws
1 SSD, 2 HDDS
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti boost SC edition
7 case fans - 4 on the mobo connects and 3 on molex
Seasonic 620 W PSU
