3 out of 5 eggs The great Sounds vs Comfort debate + the added novelty of pro-gamers 03/25/2014

This review is from: PLANTRONICS GameCom Commander Circumaural Limited Edition Tournament Gaming Headset OEM

Pros:

Quality Quality Quality Sound.
While these headphones aren't exactly DJ monitors (and I don't recall anyone saying they were), they offer an amazing audio environment. While they don't have multiple speakers in the cans (a dealbreaker for some audio purists), the dolby surround option on the usb dongle do a great job making up for it in my book.

-Sound isolation. If you're looking to lose yourself in a game and you can deal with a bit of discomfort while breaking these babies in, get them. The specs are not exaggerating.

-Excellent microphone. While most won't tell the difference over Skype, if you use Teamspeak, Raidcall, or Ventrilo people WILL hear you better than ever before.

-Added option of a cell-phone 3.5mm plug that works with the microphone. Cool when you want to use these. Seems to be an excuse for the multiple ends. I like it since I can just disconnect them and store them when I need them out of the way, but others will hate it.

These babies feel TOUGH, and likely will last me a long while. I like that as my last pair of Turtle Beach headphones actually came apart on me at the hinge.

-Extra perk: I watch ESports a lot and saw these on sale and I liked the added perk of knowing I wear the same phones as the pros. Plus 1 egg for that.

Cons:

Comfort is all relative. I'm an XL size hat and I have poofy hair, so take these comments for what they're worth.

I'll say now: if you wear glasses or have large earlobes, DON'T GET THESE. They will bring you nothing but pain.

-Unless you've got tiny earlobes expect complications in comfort. These things are TIGHT (and I have "classic" attached earlobes). The cans are elliptical, but hardly wide enough for ears larger than a sea lion's. Had Plantronics gone with a square hole or even just a wider dimension these would be PERFECT. However, because they're about half an inch too narrow (which is roughly 11-12 mm for those metrics). The depth also leaves a lot to be desired, my earlobes almost always touch hard plastic whenever I put these on. Of course this is all before I've completely broken these in.

Overheating is a bit of an issue, but I never notice.

Overall Review:

Honestly, knowing what I do now I would not have purchased these headphones. I keep justifying to myself that keeping these was not a wasted effort. After finally softening up the pads on the ear cups I'm starting to believe myself after being able to game for 4 straight hours with these on before even thinking that it'd been 4 hours.

Half the reason I haven't completely broken these in sooner is because I only game 2 hours a day on average due to other priorities.

The limited wear time of these is only a small setback for me as they allow me to stick to my sleeping schedule after work and school.
