1 out of 5 eggs OCZ Vertex 4 Died after almost 1 year 04/30/2014

This review is from: OCZ Vertex 4 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTX4-25SAT3-256G

Pros:

Worked fine till it died.

Cons:

Ocz support is terrible.

Overall Review:

After submitting my RMA request I was told try to return it to where I had originally purchased it. When I could not do that they told they could not process RMA's because OCZ had just been purchased by Toshiba so I had to wait another 3 weeks. The way they have their system set up you can only communicate with them through the RMA ticket system while they communicate with you via email. It is rather confusing since you don't have a linear record of your communications. You talk to them through their website they talk to you through email. Not to mention if there is no communication on your RMA ticket for 7 days they automaticly close it and you have to start a new one.

Once they started doing RMA's again and I sent them my SSD they said they could not give me the same model SSD and offered me this.

"We will provide VTX460-25ast3-240G.RF (refurbished drive) as a replacement.

This is an free upgrade offer.

Below is the SPEC for VTX460-25ast3-240G.RF (refurbished drive)

Please let us know if you will accept VTX460-25ast3-240G.RF (refurbished drive) as a replacement."

This one was 240 GB vs. 256 GB that the Vertex 4 had and also only had a 3 year warranty vs. the 5 year that the Vertex 4 had. They called it an upgrade but I did not see it that way. I pointed that out and told them I was not happy with their offer and they replied with this.

"We will provide VTR1-25sat3-256G.RF (refurbished drive) as a replacement.

This is an free upgrade offer.

Yes it was 256 GB and had a 5 year warranty but it was an older drive and its specs were still not on par with the Vertex 4 that I had originally purchased. So I asked them if I could pay to upgrade to the 512 GB Vertex 4. They emailed me back saying they were not able to provide the service. The next email in my inbox that same day was from UPS with a tracking number. They did not wait for me to accept the offer, they just sent it whether I liked it or not. I begrudgingly accepted the SSD when it arrived as I had been without my laptop for 2 months and I would have had to pay to send it back to them I'm sure. I've been using the replacement for a month and a half now and its working so far. As for OCZ's support...there is much to be desired.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Consumer,

First, let me apologize for the issue you experienced with the Vertex 4. The Vertex 4 has a great reputation for speed and reliability and issues with that drive are uncommon and usually correctable. I am also sorry you had a difficult time communicating with our Support Staff. During the time of the asset acquisition by Toshiba we transitioned to a new ticket system. Both systems allow you to see the entire ticket history. With our new system, in use for about 3 months, you receive an email when you first create your support ticket containing a link to the Tech Support portal. You can visit any time and view all information available. As we continue to communicate with you an email is dispatched.

I am very sorry you are disappointed with your replacement. Both the Vertex 460 and Vector are newer and provide similar if not faster function than your previous Vertex 4. Even if you had accepted the Vertex 460 your original warranty would have still been in effect. Your warranty period is always based on the purchase date of the original product.

I am confident your replacement drive will serve you well. If you experience an issue in the future we will be here to assist you.

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

Best Regards,

OCZ Storage Solutions Support
