Cost me a lot of time for various diagnostics procedures and my files were lost when I really need them.
I installed the drive and moved the OS to it. Thanks G..., I borrowed a third drive and made a backup of everything.
In the beginning the system was crashing once in a while (once a week) - I checked the cables.
Then it started crashing every couple of days - I reconnected all the cables, changed the SATA port, changed all the cables. It looked like it helps, but only for a few days.
I checked the drivers version, checked the system for malicious software - nothing. Everything is fine, all the latest updates are installed, drivers are of the latest versions, temperature of the CPU, HDD and motherboard is Ok.
Windows writes a crash dump file on every BSOD. I got WinDBG and investigated the reason of the crashes. Every time it was an IO operation failure in the Windows kernel modules.
That moment I was yet hoping that something wrong with the OS, and I did not want to return to the old drive.
One (not very wonderful) day, when I was coping my files just before going to the airport, it started crashing every 15 mins. I really needed the files, so I tried to put my old drive (having the old copy of the system) as primary, and this new one as a secondary. The system did not see the second (new) hard drive. When I forced the Device Manager to rescan the hardware, the drive was found and after 10 secs Windows told "that the drive does not function properly". So my files were lost.
Now I've returned from my trip, and the drive looks readable again.
It is now a secondary drive in my system, and I saved most of the valuable info. The one month old copy of the system on my original HHD works just fine (no BSODs, no crashes) - so, there is no reason to blame the system, or motherboard, or cables.
I got the SeaTools for Windows and ran the tests. The drive looks readable, but not always writable. SeaTools fails to erase the drive. But I successfully wiped out some files through the Windows interface.
I'm pretty sure that this is this drive failure. And I do not want to do another such experiment with the Seagate products.
