This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Pros:
This drive seems to be very fast for a harddrive. Obviously its not going to be as fast as SSDs but it is definitely faster than any harddrive I have ever used. When I open up a folder I have full of high resolution desktop backgrounds (1080p+) ...the thumbnails for the files all load INSTANTLY whereas on my 1TB Seagate drive i had before this Velociraptor, it would pause and load them line by line. Not exactly a good way of measuring the speed of a harddrive but i liked what I saw! haha
As always, Western Digital's VelociRaptor drives look very aggressive with the Icepack heatsink system. The heatsink system seems to keep the harddrives running cool (I have a 140mm fan blowing over three Velociraptors and a SSD) ...My Seagate drive ran at least 6 degrees Celcius hotter in the same spot.
I've been using Seagate drives since 2001 and never had one crash until about a week ago in my main Desktop ...Windows reported that my 1TB drive was failing and sure enough it did. Got this Velociraptor to replace it and was able to save everything ...hundreds of gigs transfered pretty quick too. After having trouble with that Seagate drive (sent it off to be repaired a year after I bought it in 2010...) I think I have officially jumped ship to Western Digital. I bought used WD Black harddrives and two 300gb VelociRaptor drives from my cousin and was really impressed with them.
Also. I am really glad WD has a 5 year warranty on this drive.
Cons:
Its expensive. Really expensive for a HDD.
I don't think I'll spend this much money on a harddrive again ...then again I will probably change my mind if there is a sale going on at Newegg AND if I need/want a new harddrive.
I can't think of anything bad to say except the price. haha
Overall Review:
Bought this to replace a failing 1TB Seagate Barracuda (that was repaired about 2 years ago).
I use this VelociRaptor primarily for storing documents and for programs I don't use every day. I have a 60gb Crucial C300 to boot Windows 8.1, this 1TB Velociraptor for storing documents and programs i dont use everyday ...then I have two 300gb Velociraptors in RAID0 for steam games.
I must say I don't think the velociraptors are that loud ...they have a different sound to them compared to other drives I've used in the past but thats it. I even have three VelociRaptor drives in my computer and don't notice them most of the time.
