Dead Silence and Maximum Performance in One Card 11/06/2014
This review is from: ASUS GeForce GTX 980 4GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card STRIX-GTX980-DC2OC-4GD5
Pros:
-The card makes no noticeable noise of any kind, even when running an intensive game on maximum settings. It idles at 41C with no fan running, and only gets into the 60s even when gaming. I don't think the fans are even coming on in most cases. That's how cool it runs. It also has no coil whine. I had problems with coil whine on two of the EVGA 780 Ti cards (returned one and replacement also had coil whine). I have to say that the combination of dead silence and extreme performance on this card is very impressive.
-My 3dmark11 score went from 13500 with a 780 TI to 15500. The card made no noise when running the benchmark.
-Shadow of Mordor runs totally smooth on Ultra settings. In this game at least it's a very noticeable upgrade over the 780Ti.
-The build quality is the best I've ever seen on a video card. It has a nice brushed black metal backplate and a custom PCB with all top shelf components, including Samsung GDDR5.
Cons:
Price. But you get what you pay for.
Overall Review:
Overall I would say it's kind of like one of those silent passively cooled cards people use in HTPCs, except it also mops the floor with everything out now in terms of performance. When you stop to think about that it actually makes the 780 and especially the noisy 290 cards seem a bit dated by comparison. AMD had better have something impressive up their sleeves or they're finished.
