3 out of 5 eggs Most Powerful Router I’ve ever Tested 01/02/2015

This review is from: Linksys E8350 AC2400 4X4 Dual-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi Router, Optimal for HD Video Streaming and Lag-Free Gaming

Pros:

Features external antennae which can be replaced if so desired.
Beamforming Technology – more reliable signal once connected.
The UI was very fast and fluid when running on a wired or 5 GHz connection, it’s the most responsive UI performance I’ve ever seen in a router.

Has a very powerful SoC for a router. A dual core 1.4 GHz QUALCOMM IPQ8064 with 512 MB of DDR3 memory is very impressive for a router, it’s basically a low end smartphone.

Power Consumption (Average Performance N Router)
• Idle: 3.7 Watts
• Load: 6.8 Watts (Transferring file to USB drive)

Cons:

Horrible and ancient user interface. Considering the price point this fits in at, I am completely disappointed by the fact that this shares the same old and basic interface as another Linksys’ router that happens to be only $40. This is further shameful based on the killer hardware in here, I mean this basically has a smartphone for hardware and it’s running the equivalent of Windows 95 for firmware. Linksys’ EA6500 and EA6700 both have worse hardware then this router and yet they have Linksys’ nice and modern looking interface.

Can’t check for firmware updates from the GUI, have to manually get the updates.
The included Ethernet cable was bad and did not work at all

No matter what I do I cannot get a wireless extender that I have to connect to it, of which connects fine to other routers, some of which are Linksys.

Overall Review:

Overall this is a fantastic router hardware wise as it’s the fastest, most powerful and best coverage from any router I’ve ever used. However the UI is just plain awful, it looks old and it just doesn’t feel like the interface for a top of the line router. Though a router is more about its performance rather than its configuration since for the most part that won’t be done very often.

Linksys E8350 Firmware: 1.0.01

Wireless-N: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230
Wireless-AC: Samsung S5

*All tests were conducted three times to ensure accuracy and repeatability of results.
