1 out of 5 eggs be careful these do not work in all machines 05/05/2015

This review is from: WD Black² Dual Drive 2.5" 120 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD Kit WD1001X06XDTL

Pros:

great idea the reviews made it look very promising. HOWEVER I think it is finicky and does not play well with some hardware.

Cons:

this drive Does not work. first drive I got would not load the operating system. tried 3 different windows CDs. tried external DVD thinking my internal drive was the problem. Had to go to WD to send it back. the "Service Tech" was a real smart ..Alick and basically implied I did not know what I was doing, I have built hundreds of machines over the years. I had to go TDY for a few months came back and tied to put it in this weekend. first try was like previous. second loaded and I thought I was off and done. then came blue screens, then lock ups then just the windows 7 "i am thinking" circle forever till I hard reset the machine. then it was 5-6 tries just to get it back to the desktop. looked at the reviews here and started the trouble shooting. The firmware update looked like it fixed it, for one reboot, then the circle. Unfortunately I can not return this one since it is now been 5 months since i got the replacement. I am going to put it on the shelf above my desk to remind me every time I am ordering parts for the computers not to order anything Western Digital. I have a WD 1.5gig USB 3.0 HD that constantly connects and disconnects so this is strike 2.

Overall Review:

I would probably call WD again, but after being talked down to like I was putting my first hard drive in a laptop ever I do not think so. I have a WD 1.5gig USB 3.0 HD that constantly connects and disconnects so this is strike 2. I have a saying " it is better to walk than strike out" so I will be walking away from western Digital.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings John,
Your feedback in this review of our Black2 drive is appreciated; it is unfortunate to hear about you unexpected experience with our support staff, and would like the opportunity to make this right. We understand your level of experience and offer the suggestions below just to confirm the steps taken for other reviews with similar concerns.

Blue Screens on subsequent boots can be an indication of a damaged or corrupted boot file or the cloned image exceeds the 118GB formatted partition of the SSD portion on the Black2 drive. It is recommended to run a recovery from a Windows Install disk to repair the boot files or perform a fresh install of the operating system or re-initialize the drive to the factory state.

It is recommended as a first step to update the firmware on the black2 drive before attempting to install an operating system and unlocking the 1TB HDD partition. Follow the link below to download the firmware Update for Windows, extract the file and follow the instructions from the Readme file.

If the drive is already unlocked, from prior attempts to install the OS and unlock the drive, it is possible to re-initialize the drive back to the factory state. Please see the article below.

Check the BIOS to ensure the Black2 drive is recognized as an AHCI from the SATA controller and not RAID. We have recognized there may be some extra steps involved when the SATA controller has an NVidia chip-set. One work around would be to use the generic Intel AHCI driver from the Device Manager if the operating system is installed.

We would appreciate if you reach out to us, and allow us to restore your faith in our brand, by searching for the root cause of your drive issues and providing a positive resolution. Please contact us directly by phone or Email and be sure to mention this Newegg review as a point of reference to our support staff.
