A very good niche item

Pros:
Works well for what it is designed to do
Actually a rather full featured router

Cons:
Support was among the worst I have ever experienced -Phone and Forums. I like to call support if they offer me a toll free number and Trendnet does. Getting through was quick but I connected to a girl whose English was not up to snuff nor was
her comprehension of the product. She repeatedly told me to hook the TEW-817DTR up in a manner that would make it
non functional. When I reported this to her she asked me to wait a moment while she consulted someone. Of course she was polite.
There are no Trendnet forums that search found, which is to bad but then again many company forums are so bad (hundreds of unanswered questions) that perhaps Trendnet saw no purpose.
Overall Review:
One never knows what they will find on the road in the way of internet connectivity. Some places offer it for free some charge a few bucks for 24 hrs of connnectivity. What I do know is that if you are traveling with older kids or teens when you do stop you need to relax and that isn't possible if your kids want internet to use and abuse as they wish. The TEW-817DTR has two modes for sharing a single connection. If plugged into a wired internet connection it functions as a full featured router. If set up in WISP mode the TEW-817DTR also functions as a wireless AP. The unit is plenty fast enough for it's designed purpose.
I had no issues setting up and using the TEW-817DTR in router mode. The signal dropped off more rapidly then I would have liked as I moved away from the TEW-817DTR. I doubt the problem I experienced would be of consequence in a one room motel/hotel setting where there are no walls to block the signal.
A great selling point/feature of the TEW-817DTR is When the unit is switched to AP+WISP mode the TEW-817DTR can be configured as an Access Point, client to your WISP connection or as a Repeater.
The unit is larger then a simple range extender yet intelligently designed. With some careful placement and a proper wall receptacle the user can still have access to both wall plugs. I used a short ( 1 foot ) extension cord so I could easily access the CAT connector and the TEW-817DTR's extremely small selector switches.
The management login password IS case sensitive
I think this is a niche unit for those that travel on business with an entourage or take the family on vacation to Wally World. I wish it had at least one CAT cable output then it could act as a backup in home use.
All in all I like the item and the thought that went into it. I only wish that phone support was waaayyyyy better
