This review is from: CORSAIR RMx Series RM750X 750W 80 PLUS GOLD Haswell Ready Full Modular ATX12V & EPS12V SLI and Crossfire Ready Power Supply
Pros:
I've been using Corsair supplies in my builds, almost exclusively now for the last 10 years. I can honestly say I have never had a Corsair power supply fail - and I have to believe that this one is no exception.
- It comes nicely packaged, with cable ties and a good variety of cables.
- The drive cables are ribbon-style, the power cables are not (they have integrated capacitors, for further supply voltage filtering)
- Unit will run in totally quiet mode, fanless up until around 325 watts of DC power load. Great for when you use your machine as a media server or general low-demand tasks.
- The build quality looks to be excellent. Even uses an epoxy-coated wire guard for the (huge!) fan - not cheap metal-stamped guard.
- Corsair did not cheap-out on key components; all capacitors are Japan-sourced and when I looked inside the case, appear to be way over-engineered for the job. You won't have any issues with failing caps (which often don't evidence themselves until damage has been done to your motherboard).
- 7 year warranty (!)
- Fully modular cables, easily used with dual graphics cards. Any cables you don't need - don't plug them in. No mess, no waste.
- Gold certified, meaning it is high efficiency and very stable across various line voltages, input spikes and/or noise on the supply side power. If you live or work in an area where you have sketchy incoming power, it's important to invest in a power supply rated this way.
- Unit is nice looking, and it has good heft to it. I know it sounds weird, but when devices like this feel heavy/solid -- it usually means they are well built (e.g. no skimping on transformers or heat sinks).
Cons:
Hard to find anything wrong with this power supply. One odd thing, which is not a huge deal - it comes with 8 connectors for the old style "molex" 4-hole connectors (you know, the ones your dad used to use on floppy drives). Not sure why we need 8 of those. I would have probably went with an extra PCI-E cable instead, but it's not a big problem.
Overall Review:
I am happy to have been given the opportunity to exercise this unit in my system for nearly two weeks, without a glitch. I run dual GPUs and was able to get the supply to run in fan mode. I also abused it a bit by blocking the intake air, and it didn't even get hot enough to shut itself down. It's a really well made unit and I would not hesitate to use it in my next build. At the price Newegg has it really is a no-brainer, unless you need to go with the 1000w unit which is even beefier!
