NEC E231W monitor (dec 2011)
Pros: Solid stand, move all the ways it should. Decent picture quality
Cons: Chintzy OSD controls, monitor parameters can not be set by by NEC's "Navigate" monitor software
Overall Review: I wanted a monitor that rotates (pivot) for use in portrait & landscape mode. The monitor does that well: solid stand, easy to pivot and otherwise adjust. Picture quality is decent. However, as a programmer (in a dual monitor setup) my standards aren't high. I notice the picture looks washed out when viewed looking down. From straight on, or looking up, it's a lot better! Odd. Big complaint (not just mine), is chintzy monitor (osd) controls. In particular, a toggle used for left-right selection. It was badly responsive, and then its pencil point sized rubber cover fell off! That actually helped: prodding the metal rod underneath with a pen point works clumsily. Making it worse, the Navigate program from NEC website (easily found) that sets monitor parameters, won't NOT work with this monitor. Lots of other NEC monitors, but not this one (NEC tech support told me this). So I am stuck with the stupid OSD controls. I don't tweak 'em much, so no big deal. But really!
Laptop purchase
Everything went smoothly, and the laptop was delivered on time. A small issue: I would liked to have added more RAM to the laptop. But although I emailed them asking about the possiblility of adding more RAM, they never got back. I might of been too late (they might of shipped it already), so I am not annoyed. But it would of been convenient if that had worked out (Note that I was able to order and install the memory after the laptop arrived)
