No issues

ASUS M4A88TD-M/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: I have built two computers with this board last year and both are as stable as a rock. One system is totally stock and unremarkable but the other is in a low-volume server role with multiple disk drives, has a special serial port card, and Kingston ECC memory. No hardware-related issues to date. All features that I've used/tweaked work as advertised.

Cons: None that I know of.

Overall Review: Planning on building a third system with this board in the next few weeks.

Most Critical Review

What has happened to this router???

D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit
D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Not much anymore.

Cons: I've had to send the last two back: The first one bricked itself during a firmware upgrade The second one, right out of the box, had issues connecting to my modem. It finally connected, I did a firmware upgrade and it worked for a few days. Then it wouldn't connect any longer. The router admin screens showed the cable as "disconnected". It wasn't a cabling issue as I plugged in my old D-Link DIR-655 and it connected straight away. The admin interface is flaky - have to re-enter it a lot due to connection issues. Why does this blasted unit have to reboot itself after nearly every setting change, however minor??? I have seen evidence of log file corruption - entries that should have been there were not logged, or were logged inconsistently I've encountered bugs in the settings - like you enter a list of three IP addresses in a filter and it only recognizes the first two - stupid stuff like that.

Overall Review: I've deployed about five of these to customers last year and early this year and haven't had many issues until now - they have been rock solid. Maybe I've hit a bad batch, but I can't waste any more time on them.

Pros: Inexpensive, no issues with installation.

Cons: After 1.5 yrs, the drawer sticks closed - won't open when you push the open/close button. Have to push a paper clip into the "rescue" hole to get it open.

Overall Review: CD/DVD burners are usually the first component to fail in new builds in my experience, but time to failure here was way too fast. This build was for a customer and now I have to replace it at my cost to maintain good relations.

Not Bad

"KAZE MASTER" 5.25" Bay Fan Controller
"KAZE MASTER" 5.25" Bay Fan Controller

Pros: It's lasted for about two years (as of 6/7/11). Inexpensive, installs easily, electronically stable (except for the display - see below).

Cons: The VFD display dims over time. After two years, it is very dim and almost impossible to read the temperature displays (the fan speeds are still readable).

Overall Review: It is installed in a 2U SUPERMICRO CSE-822T-400LPB chassis with four fans. The fans are small and high-RPM so they actually create noise in a musical key, oddly enough. I use it to get all of the in sync so that they all produce the same "note". Otherwise, its horribly dischordant and the sound drives me up the wall - like hitting the C and C# keys on a piano keyboard together. Getting them sync'd perfectly is a challenge because sensitivity of the knobs doesn't allow for easy precise, minute adjustments.

Defective

Western Digital Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: These drives have always performed well for me. I have two in my WHS and several out in the field with not a single problem, until now. Newegg cheerfully issued a refund for this item.

Cons: Unfortunately, this one is making the "thunk/clunk" sound every few seconds which is indicating there is a full-scale head deflection/movement up against a stop. You can feel the vibration of this impact all through the computer case's drive cage. I've owned enough disk drives in my time to know this is a precursor to death. Strangely, the WD DataLifeguard diagnostic reports no problems. I called WD tech support, described the symptom and they said to RMA the drive as this is definitely not normal. When I asked if there was any way to determine what was causing a full-scale head deflection they said there was not, and that the diagnostic wouldn't see that (?) What is of the most concern to me is that when I pulled the drive I noticed a lot of scratches on the back side of the drive which is evidence that this drive is NOT new. I'm wondering if WD mistakenly released this drive back into the retail channels as a new drive.

Not perfect but good for tight budgets

SUPERMICRO CSE-822T-400LPB Black 2U Rackmount Server Case 400W Power Supply w/ PFC 1 External 5.25" Drive Bays
SUPERMICRO CSE-822T-400LPB Black 2U Rackmount Server Case 400W Power Supply w/ PFC 1 External 5.25" Drive Bays

Pros: Despite some issues, this is an excellent value for the money, considering that it includes a stable power supply AND the rack rails. At maximum load my system doesn't even come close to maxing out the 400W power supply. The construction is solid for a chassis of this price. Despite what some people say, I find the fan noise quite reasonable compared to screaming HP rack-mounted servers. The fans are easily popped out for cleaning or replacement. Build: O/S: Windows Home Server PP3 5 WD Caviar Black disk drives (various sizes) Samsung TS L462 CD-RW/DVD-ROM Nvidia Geforce 7300GS low-profile video card Scythe KM01-BK fan controller SIIG SC-SAE212-S2 eSata card

Cons: Documentation is sparse. The 12V ATX power cable is too short, but a inexpensive extension cable fixes that easily. The drive sleds are very tight, requiring some effort (and care) in inserting and removing them. The front-panel LEDs don't work but I'm not sure if this is a defect or a voltage-mismatch issue with the mobo. My CD-RW/DVD-ROM drawer sticks because the case front cut-out for it is slightly too small. The 5.25" bay had an incomprehensible metal factory insert that was obviously designed to be used in some way after reversing it but I could never figure out how to make use of it so the Scythe fan controller I have in this bay is unsecured on one side. No big deal here.

Overall Review: If you're limited on cash and need a rack-mount chassis and are willing to put up with a few issues, this one may be for you.
